Agriculture Returns to the Radar as Supply Risks Intensify (MOO, ADM, CF, NTR)

Archer Daniels Midland, CF Industries and Nutrien strengthen after appearing in Tuesday’s SYS client report, while MOO confirms broader participation.

Agriculture Is Back on the SYS Radar

Earlier in 2026, SetYourStop identified a developing fertilizer theme as Middle East supply disruptions, rising fertilizer prices, unusual activity, and improving charts began pointing in the same direction.

That research was documented in our original report:

Fertilizer Prices Are Surging in 2026 as War in the Middle East Disrupts Supply and Charts Flagged the Theme Early

The same research process has now surfaced the group for a second time.

On Tuesday, August 18, the SYS Daily Setups report identified improving technical structures in Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), CF Industries (CF) and Nutrien (NTR.TO). Three related agriculture companies were improving simultaneously, placing the sector back on our radar before the latest move.

Today, those signals are receiving follow-through. At approximately 11:15 a.m. ET, MOO was higher by roughly 2.2%, ADM by 3.0%, CF Industries by 5.4%, and Nutrien by 3.2%.

The synchronized advance, accompanied by strength in MOO, suggests the market is responding to a broader combination of supply risk, improving earnings, and technical momentum.

VanEck Agribusiness ETF (MOO)

MOO provides the broad confirmation because it measures participation across the agriculture value chain.

According to VanEck’s August 19 holdings, Nutrien represented 6.66% of the fund, ADM represented 5.17%, CF Industries represented 4.63% and Bunge represented 3.47%.

Deere, Corteva and Mosaic added another significant layer of agriculture exposure. Together, these seven companies represented approximately 37% of MOO.

Continued strength in the ETF would support the view that the individual signals are developing into a broader agriculture sector rotation.

Why There Is Follow-Through

The current move is being supported by three connected developments.

Black Sea Grain Shipments Are Being Disrupted

Russia and Ukraine are critical suppliers to the global grain market. Recent attacks on ports, terminals, vessels and surrounding infrastructure have delayed or canceled cargoes during an important export period.

Buyers are evaluating replacement supplies from Australia, Argentina and North America, but those alternatives are more expensive.

Chicago wheat futures had advanced more than 17% since the beginning of July by August 20.

Changing trade routes can increase freight costs, widen regional grain spreads and create urgent demand for alternative storage, processing and export infrastructure. These conditions are directly relevant to global grain merchants such as ADM and Bunge.

Global Fertilizer Supply Remains Vulnerable

The fertilizer catalyst began earlier in 2026 when conflict in the Middle East disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the World Trade Organization, Gulf economies supplied 24.8% of global nitrogen fertilizer exports and 11.4% of global phosphatic fertilizer exports.

Export restrictions introduced following the conflict affected as much as 15% of global fertilizer trade. If the disruption through the Strait is treated as an effective restriction on Gulf fertilizer exports, the affected share increases to 23.3%.

The initial fertilizer price spike has moderated, but production outages, elevated energy costs, export restrictions and strong import demand continue to support the market.

CF Industries and Nutrien also benefit from comparatively favorable North American natural gas costs. Natural gas is an essential nitrogen fertilizer feedstock, giving both companies a potential cost advantage when international energy prices remain elevated.

Company Fundamentals Are Confirming the Charts

The move is not being driven by geopolitics alone.

ADM increased its 2026 earnings guidance.

CF Industries reported strong first-half earnings, substantial free cash flow, and a higher dividend.

Nutrien reported record first-half potash volumes, increased its potash sales guidance, and lowered its capital expenditure outlook.

These developments provide fundamental support beneath technical structures that had already begun improving.

Archer Daniels Midland (ADM)

The Grain Merchandising Signal

Tuesday’s SYS report described ADM as breaking out from a short-term falling channel after reclaiming its moving average cluster and positioning below resistance.

Price had interrupted its recent decline, recovered its trend references, and begun pressing toward a larger resistance area.

Chart From Tuesday’s SYS Report

Today’s advance is providing follow-through from that setup.

ADM connects producers and customers through origination, storage, ports, crushing, processing, transportation and merchandising.

When Black Sea grain becomes unavailable or unreliable, importers must locate replacement supply from other regions. That process can change freight economics, regional price spreads, processing demand and infrastructure utilization.

ADM entered this environment with improving earnings.

The company reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.84, while total segment operating profit increased 75% from the prior-year quarter.

Management increased 2026 adjusted earnings per share guidance to approximately $5.15 to $5.60 from $4.15 to $4.70.

The improved outlook reflected stronger commercial and operational execution, constructive crushing and ethanol margins, momentum in Nutrition, global trade dynamics, and support from renewable fuel policy.

The Black Sea disruption adds another potential earnings channel to a business that was already improving.

The next technical confirmation would be sustained momentum above the breakout line and progress through resistance. A reversal below the reclaimed moving average cluster would weaken the setup.

CF Industries (CF)

The Direct Nitrogen Signal

Tuesday’s report identified CF Industries attempting to break out from a short-term falling channel or bullish flag while reclaiming its moving average cluster.

The pattern was developing near the apex of a larger consolidation, making the short-term signal part of a more important technical decision area.

Chart From Tuesday’s SYS Report

CF is providing the strongest follow-through of the three names today.

The company reported first-half net earnings of $1.34 billion and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization of $2.18 billion.

Trailing twelve-month free cash flow reached approximately $1.82 billion, and the company increased its quarterly dividend by 20%.

CF is the cleanest direct expression of tight global nitrogen supply.

Elevated international energy costs and constrained export availability can support nitrogen prices while CF produces from a comparatively favourable North American feedstock position.

The company does not require fertilizer prices to return to their initial panic highs. The earnings case remains constructive if realized prices remain above the assumptions previously reflected in expectations.

The short-term breakout is developing, but the larger consolidation still requires confirmation. Continued momentum above its upper boundary would strengthen the broader technical thesis.

Nutrien (NTR.TO)

The Diversified Fertilizer Signal

Tuesday’s SYS report described Nutrien as attempting to break out from a bullish flag continuation pattern after reclaiming its moving average cluster.

The chart showed a stock repairing after a pullback while remaining connected to its earlier 2026 advance.

Chart From Tuesday’s SYS Report

Today’s advance is providing follow-through from that structure.

Nutrien reported record first half potash sales volumes and strong operational execution across its potash business.

First half potash adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased to $1.24 billion.

Nitrogen adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased to $1.12 billion, supported by stronger global benchmarks and lower natural gas costs.

Management increased 2026 potash sales volume guidance to 14.2 million to 14.8 million tonnes and lowered capital expenditure guidance to $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion.

Nutrien expects global nitrogen fundamentals to remain tight during the second half of 2026 because of trade flow disruptions, production outages, elevated energy prices and import demand from India and Brazil.

Management also expects firmer crop prices and an earlier fall fertilizer application season to support North American crop input demand.

The principal risk is that higher fertilizer benchmarks must translate into realized earnings. Nutrien’s second quarter results showed that stronger benchmarks were offset by lower volumes and higher sulfur costs.

Nutrien second quarter 2026 results

Continued momentum above the resistance breakout line would strengthen the continuation pattern. A reversal below the reclaimed moving average cluster would weaken the setup.

Additional Confirmation Names

Bunge Global (BG)

Bunge provides the most direct confirmation of the ADM thesis.

Strength in both companies would suggest the market is assigning greater value to global grain merchants capable of connecting displaced supply with buyers.

Bunge’s expanded platform following the Viterra transaction provides exposure to oilseeds, grains, food, feed, and fuel.

Deere and Company (DE)

Deere provides confirmation from agricultural equipment.

Its catalyst differs from the fertilizer and grain merchandising catalysts, making its participation useful.

Deere reported third-quarter net income of $1.379 billion, providing a separate earnings catalyst inside MOO.

Deere third quarter 2026 results

Corteva (CTVA)

Corteva provides exposure to seeds and crop protection.

Stronger crop prices can improve the willingness of growers to spend money protecting yield.

Corteva is not a direct fertilizer trade, but its participation would strengthen the evidence of a broader agriculture rotation.

Mosaic (MOS)

Mosaic provides exposure to potash and phosphate, but its recent earnings quality has been weaker than CF Industries and Nutrien.

A stronger MOS chart would indicate that fertilizer participation is broadening. Continued underperformance would suggest the market is selecting companies with the strongest earnings leverage rather than buying every fertilizer producer.

What Determines Whether the Move Continues

The continuation case depends on several conditions remaining aligned.

  • Black Sea disruption must remain serious enough to affect shipments, replacement costs, and trade routes.
  • Global fertilizer supply must remain constrained enough to support realized nitrogen and potash prices.
  • India and Brazil must continue absorbing available fertilizer supply.
  • Crop prices must remain firm enough to support farmer income and crop input spending.
  • ADM, CF Industries and Nutrien must convert favorable industry conditions into earnings and cash flow.
  • MOO must continue confirming participation across grain merchants, fertilizer producers, equipment manufacturers and crop input companies.

The thesis would weaken if Black Sea or Middle East shipping routes normalize, crop and fertilizer prices reverse sharply, higher input costs damage farmer demand, or company execution deteriorates.

The charts provide the final test.

A loss of the reclaimed moving average clusters in ADM, CF Industries or Nutrien would weaken the individual setups. A failed move in MOO would indicate that the broader agriculture rotation is not yet established.

The Bigger Takeaway

The original SYS fertilizer report documented the first appearance of the theme earlier in 2026.

Tuesday’s client report marked its return to the radar.

This time, CF Industries and Nutrien were joined by ADM, adding a global grain merchandising component while MOO provided broader sector confirmation.

Today’s move did not create the setups. It provided follow-through from technical structures that had already been identified through the SetYourStop research process.

The theme appeared once. Our work surfaced it again. The market is now providing confirmation.
