Markets Close the Week Higher as TSX Extends Record Run and Wall Street Eyes Tariff Deadline
U.S. Markets: Speculation Drives Rally, But Tariff Deadline Looms
U.S. equities ended the week near record highs, supported by speculative momentum and corporate buybacks, as retail investors continued to drive price action. The S&P 500 has gained approximately 26% since bottoming on April 8, staging a sharp rebound following earlier concerns tied to aggressive tariff announcements. However, much of the advance has occurred without significant institutional participation, with positioning still below February levels.
Focus now turns to the looming July 9 tariff deadline, as a temporary suspension of import levies is set to expire. While progress has been made—such as a new deal with Vietnam that includes a reduced 20% tariff on some exports—negotiations with other trading partners remain unresolved. Talks with India are ongoing, while discussions with Japan have hit obstacles, underscoring the geopolitical uncertainty that continues to shadow the market.
Despite lingering caution around U.S. economic growth, elevated valuations, and uneven institutional commitment, historical trends offer some encouragement. Over the past two decades, July has been the strongest month for the S&P 500, with an average return of 2.5%, suggesting potential for continued strength—especially if the tariff deadline passes without further escalation.
Investors are also monitoring the upcoming slate of economic data, including inflation figures and second-quarter earnings, which will provide further clarity on the economic outlook and Federal Reserve policy direction. The path forward hinges on whether institutions begin allocating more capital, confirming the rally’s staying power.
TSX: Record Highs Continue Amid Yield Drop and Housing Strength
The TSX Composite Index edged up 1.9 points, or 0.01%, to close at a new record high of 27,036.16 on Friday, extending its winning streak and marking a 1.29% gain for the week. The index is now up 9.33% year-to-date, reflecting steady upward momentum despite lighter holiday volume.
Sector performance was led by real estate, which rose 1.9%, aided by a drop in Canadian 10-year bond yields to 3.353%—down 4.1 basis points on the day. Lower yields, combined with signs of a stabilizing housing market, supported broader confidence. Notably, Toronto-area home sales increased for the third consecutive month in June, highlighting a resilient property sector.
Consumer staples also posted gains, up 0.4%, while technology slipped 0.3% and energy declined 0.2%, following a 0.75% pullback in U.S. crude oil to $66.50 per barrel ahead of a widely expected OPEC+ production increase. Despite softness in some sectors, overall sentiment remains constructive, with investors continuing to favor key components such as banks, materials, and gold miners, all of which remain well-positioned within the TSX’s structure.
The energy sector received additional scrutiny after Canada’s Natural Resources Ministry stated that no private sector proposals have been submitted to build a new crude pipeline to the Pacific Coast, suggesting infrastructure constraints may persist.

Momentum Holds, But Eyes on Macro Events
Markets across North America continue to trend higher, supported by sector-specific strength and speculative enthusiasm. The TSX remains anchored by domestic housing and commodity demand, while U.S. equities benefit from a historically strong seasonal tailwind and retail-driven momentum.
Still, risk remains finely balanced. The expiration of the U.S. tariff suspension on July 9, coupled with upcoming inflation data and corporate earnings, could redefine the short-term trajectory. With institutional investors yet to fully commit, the next phase of the rally may depend on broader macro clarity and renewed confidence in the underlying economic narrative.
