Market Rebound Continues as Tariff Uncertainty Tempers Sentiment

While I typically avoid sharing personal opinions and focus instead on presenting data that allows readers to draw their own conclusions, I’d like to make a brief exception this week. I don’t follow many voices in this industry—too often, they resemble politicians: appearing on TV to speak in circles, using vague, inflated language, and offering endless “I think” and “I feel” statements without much real substance. There’s also no shortage of posturing and self-promotion.

That said, the video linked below comes from someone whose mindset closely aligns with mine. If I were to make a video this week, it would echo the exact points shared here. For those with a few minutes to spare, I highly recommend watching. It’s a clear, direct summary of what’s really going on—and while you’re at it, don’t forget to keep an eye on the Bitcoin chart.

Bitcoin – Daily Chart

Markets Extend Gains Amid Tariff Reprieve
Stocks kicked off the holiday-shortened week on a strong note, with Wall Street’s major indexes notching a second consecutive day of gains, something not seen since late March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 312 points, or 0.8%, while the S&P 500 added 0.8% and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.6%. After an early surge of over 1%, markets briefly dipped into negative territory during midday trading before recovering by the close. The rally attempt, though volatile, remains intact.

Dow Jones Industrial Average – Daily Chart

S&P 500 – Daily Chart

Nasdaq – Daily Chart

Tariff Reversal Fuels Tech and Broader Optimism
The rebound was driven largely by a decision from the Trump administration to temporarily exempt smartphones, personal computers, memory chips, servers, and other electronics from newly imposed reciprocal tariffs. The shift gave an immediate boost to heavyweight tech stocks like Apple (AAPL) and Nvidia (NVDA), with Apple finishing up 2.2%—its highest close since April 3—though still trading well below its longer-term moving averages. Nvidia initially rallied but closed slightly lower and declined again in after-hours trading.

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) jumped 4.6%, closing at its 50-day moving average after falling below it in late March, while Tesla (TSLA) snapped a two-day losing streak but ended the session nearly flat. Despite intraday strength, several names trimmed gains following comments from President Donald Trump, who reiterated that no one is “getting off the hook” and that new, more targeted tariffs on sectors such as semiconductors will follow in the coming weeks.

Breadth Improves as Small Caps and Transports Outperform
The market saw broad-based participation, with the Dow Jones Transportation Index rising 1.2% and 30 industry groups advancing more than 2% on the day. Notable strength was seen in metals and mining, biotech, insurance, and investment brokers. Small-cap stocks also outperformed, rising 1.18%.

Russell 2000 (ETF) – Daily Chart

Market breadth was solid, with advancers outnumbering decliners nearly 4-to-1 on the NYSE and 3-to-1 on the Nasdaq. However, trading volume was lower on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq.

Bond Yields Fall; Dollar Under Pressure
Treasury yields pulled back sharply, offering relief after last week’s spike. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 4.36%, and the 2-year yield dropped to 3.83%. The U.S. Dollar Index continued its decline, reaching levels not seen since 2022. The weakening dollar comes amid heightened trade uncertainty and growing recession concerns, as signaled by a recent Wall Street Journal survey showing the probability of a U.S. recession rising to 45%, nearly double the risk forecast in January.

10-Year US Treasury Yield

TSX Hits 11-Day High as Financials, Real Estate Lead
North of the border, the TSX Composite Index rose 278.73 points, or 1.2%, to close at 23,866.53, its highest level in 11 days. The rally was fueled by strong performances in financials (+1.7%) and interest rate-sensitive sectors like real estate (+1.9%) and utilities (+1.6%) as Canadian bond yields declined. The Canadian 10-year yield fell 14.2 basis points to 3.125%, after reaching a three-month high last Friday. Investors were also buoyed by a growing belief that the Bank of Canada may be compelled to cut rates at least twice more this year due to increasing recession risks tied to U.S.-led trade friction.

The materials sector, which includes mining stocks, gained 1%, supported by rising copper prices. Investor sentiment improved amid doubts that the originally proposed tariffs would be implemented at full scale.

TSX – Daily Chart

Corporate Highlights and Earnings Watch
Goldman Sachs (GS) delivered a strong quarterly report, posting earnings of $14.12 per share on $15.06 billion in revenue, beating analyst expectations. The stock rose 2% and held its short-term support levels.

Ford (F) rose 4% after the White House hinted at a potential pause on auto tariffs, helping the stock reclaim a key moving average. General Motors (GM) added over 3%, though it remains below key technical levels.

MP Materials (MP) soared 22% after reports surfaced that the administration may invoke executive authority to stockpile rare earth minerals amid Chinese export restrictions. These materials are essential to electric vehicles and high-tech electronics.

Looking ahead, all eyes turn to retail sales data due Wednesday, with economists forecasting a 1.4% increase for March, driven in part by pre-tariff vehicle purchases. A slew of earnings reports is also expected this week from major names including Netflix (NFLX), UnitedHealth (UNH), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Travelers (TRV), and American Express (AXP).

Global Markets Climb; China in Focus
Markets abroad followed the U.S. lead. Benchmarks in Japan and South Korea rose around 1%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index jumped 2.4%. In Europe, key indexes also moved higher. Meanwhile, Chinese exports surged ahead of expected U.S. tariff enforcement, and President Xi Jinping began a Southeast Asia tour aimed at reinforcing regional trade alliances.

Conclusion
Markets appear to be regaining their footing after a volatile stretch, buoyed by tariff relief for tech and easing bond yields. But the rally remains fragile. The administration’s shifting tone on trade, coupled with an approaching wave of corporate earnings and key economic data, means investors should brace for more twists ahead. While Monday’s action shows signs of improving sentiment, policy uncertainty and technical overhead remain critical watchpoints as the market navigates this rebound attempt.
