SYS Daily Report

Risk Assets Weaken as Crypto Volatility Intensifies and Precious Metals Strengthen

At the time of being published, before the close, markets reflected a cautious tone across global equities, digital assets, and currency markets. Investors navigated shifting expectations around monetary policy as central-bank commentary influenced rate assumptions, while volatility in crypto assets carried over into related equities. Precious metals strengthened, particularly gold and silver, which continued to build on recent advances. Throughout the session, macro signals, index breadth, and sector rotation provided a mixed but revealing picture of sentiment.

Macro Overview

The macro landscape leaned defensive as global markets responded to evolving rate expectations. The Bank of Japan signaled a potential shift toward policy tightening, which supported the yen and added pressure to the U.S. dollar. Meanwhile, expectations for a Federal Reserve rate adjustment remained elevated, reinforced by commentary from policymakers and anticipation of upcoming inflation data. U.S. manufacturing readings continued to show softness, adding to a generally cautious risk tone heading into the final portion of the trading day.

10-Year US Treasury Yield – Daily Chart

US Dollar – Daily Chart

Treasury yields firmed during the session, while the U.S. dollar weakened against the yen and softened across other major currency pairs. Market participants prepared for additional macro signals, including labor data and delayed inflation readings expected later in the week.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Market breadth pointed to uneven participation across major indexes. While certain large-cap names attempted to stabilize, underlying participation weakened as risk-sensitive segments struggled. The S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average each moved lower, reflecting selective pressure in growth sectors and crypto-linked equities. The Russell 2000 (IWM) lagged as investors leaned away from higher-beta exposures.

Dow Jones Industrial Average – Daily Chart

Russell 2000 (ETF) – Daily Chart

Technology names such as Broadcom (AVGO) and Shopify (SHOP) retreated, while industrial and energy exposures showed relative resilience. Transportation-related names such as Knight-Swift Transportation (KNX) continued forming constructive structures supported by bullish options activity and improving technical posture, along with other trucking-related stocks.

TSX Recap

Canadian equities reflected a steady but cautious tone. Resource-linked names provided ongoing support, benefitting from continued strength in precious metals and stability across energy services. Technical setups across the TSX maintained constructive alignment, with several watchlist names holding firm.

TSX – Daily Chart

Standout structures included Colonial Coal International (CAD.V), which continued to advance along its existing base, and Trican Well Service (TCW.TO), which maintained progress above rising moving averages. Bausch Health (BHC.TO) attempted to build on the right side of a developing bottoming structure, while Aecon Group (ARE.TO) worked to emerge from a continuation pattern.

Digital Assets Overview

Crypto markets experienced broad weakness as major assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) moved sharply lower. The pullback represented one of the more decisive downside sessions in recent months, which carried into crypto-related equities including Coinbase (COIN), Strategy (MSTR), Hut 8 (HUT), and Riot Platforms (RIOT). Sentiment indicators pointed toward heightened caution as several digital-asset benchmarks remained under meaningful technical pressure.

Commodity Watch

Commodities displayed a sharp contrast to the risk-off tone in equities. Gold strengthened, reaching its highest levels in several weeks, while silver extended a powerful rally that has accelerated over multiple sessions. The consistent strength in precious metals supported corresponding miners and royalty companies.

Potash-related names also remained constructive amid firming agricultural and fertilizer themes. Nutrien (NTR.TO) continued shaping the right side of a multi-month consolidation, while Millennial Potash (MLP.V) extended its attempt to move toward new highs.

Crude oil edged higher following recent policy confirmations from major producing nations, while copper held stable within a supportive technical structure.

Sector & Thematic Movers

Sector performance was mixed. Energy and consumer-oriented groups demonstrated relative strength, while health care and utilities weakened. Crypto-linked segments were the day’s weakest performers, following the broad decline in digital asset prices. Semiconductors and software names also encountered resistance, adding to softness across growth categories.

Transportation names continued to act well, with Knight-Swift Transportation (KNX) supported by bullish flow and an improving pattern. AI-aligned names, including Synopsys (SNPS), saw pockets of strength following corporate developments that enhanced sentiment around the group.

Stock Movers

Individual stock action captured several notable developments. Strategy (MSTR) fell significantly as bitcoin weakened, while Coinbase (COIN) declined as trading activity across crypto assets diminished. Moderna (MRNA) retreated following regulatory-related headlines that resurfaced concerns around its vaccine franchise. Synopsys (SNPS) saw early strength after incremental investment activity but later encountered overhead resistance.

Canadian setups remained active. Nutrien (NTR.TO) continued firming as it shaped a constructive base. Base Carbon (BCBN.NE) held near recent highs, while Aecon Group (ARE.TO) and Bausch Health (BHC.TO) continued forming their respective technical structures.

Options & Insider Flow

Options flow leaned bullish across many large-cap names. Robust call activity appeared in Goldman Sachs (GS), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Meta Platforms (META), Rivian Automotive (RIVN), Deckers Outdoor (DECK), and others. Premium collected through put selling added further evidence of institutional optimism in several names.

Bullish individual option trades highlighted new exposure in Nebius Group (NBIS), ASML Holding (ASML), Unity Software (U), Rivian Automotive (RIVN), Tesla (TSLA), Knight-Swift Transportation (KNX), Sigma Lithium (SGML), Freshpet (FRPT), and iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI). Many of these trades exceeded prior open interest and reflected fresh institutional engagement.

Insider activity revealed multiple purchases across small-cap biotechnology, banking, and technology firms. Canadian insider buying remained active, led by Rokmaster Resources (RKR) and NXT Energy Solutions (SFD). No Canadian insider sales were reported.

Institutional ownership increased meaningfully last month in names such as ONTO Innovation (ONTO), ETHA ETF (ETHA), Transocean (RIG), SiteOne Landscape Supply (SITE), Monster Beverage (MNST), and several others.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small caps reflected the broader risk-off tone, with price action showing hesitation across several speculative pockets even as select names continued to form constructive bases. Cyclical small caps were mixed, while growth-oriented issues displayed sharper intraday swings, consistent with the elevated volatility seen throughout the session. Several charts across the group continued to build out early-stage technical structures—ranging from bottoming formations to potential continuation patterns—suggesting that, despite the market’s defensive backdrop, the small-cap universe is still producing setups worth monitoring as conditions stabilize. The group remains one of the more sensitive gauges of investor conviction, and its ability to firm up will be an important component of the broader market narrative heading into the next catalyst window.

Conclusion

Heading into the close, markets reflected a risk-averse tone shaped by crypto-asset weakness, shifting rate expectations, and mixed sector performance. While major indexes softened, resource-linked equities, precious metals, and specific transportation and industrial names maintained constructive positioning. Options flow remained broadly supportive across several large-cap equities, and insider activity underscored continued interest in select small-cap names. With key economic data scheduled later in the week, the market enters the next session balancing defensive posture with emerging opportunities across materials, industrials, technology, and transportation.
