AI Frenzy Lifts Nasdaq and S&P 500 to Record Highs as Commodities and Crypto Surge

Markets surged Monday as investors embraced risk, pushing the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite to new record highs, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped modestly. The rally was powered by renewed enthusiasm in artificial intelligence, strong commodity prices, and a broad appetite for growth assets despite a prolonged U.S. government shutdown and ongoing political volatility abroad. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 4.16%, while the 2-year yield climbed to 3.6%, reflecting moderate upward pressure in rates as traders priced in a 94.6% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s late October meeting.

The U.S. Dollar showed relative stability near recent lows, reflecting a mild softening in the greenback amid global demand for hard assets and digital stores of value. Political disruptions in France and leadership changes in Japan added volatility to global currency markets, as the Japanese yen weakened sharply following the election of Sanae Takaichi as Japan’s ruling party leader.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Market breadth remained broadly positive as the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.7%, the S&P 500 rose 0.4%, and the Russell 2000 advanced 0.4% to a fresh record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.1%, hindered by weakness in financials, healthcare, and consumer staples. Technology, communication services, and energy led sector gains, underscoring a rotation into risk and growth.

Market Breadth flashed green across most major indexes, confirming strength in participation. Trading volume was robust, with advancing issues outnumbering decliners on both the NYSE and Nasdaq, reflecting persistent confidence in the market’s uptrend.

TSX Recap

The TSX Composite Index closed at a record high, rising 0.2% to 30,531.88, marking its seventh straight gain. The advance mirrored Wall Street’s bullish tone, with strength concentrated in mining and technology stocks. The materials sector gained 1.3%, supported by gold futures rallying to $3,948.50 per ounce, approaching the $4,000 threshold. The energy sector climbed 1.6% as oil prices firmed, while information technology added 0.3%, aided by a 14.8% surge in Bitfarms (BITF.TO) as Bitcoin reached a new all-time high.

Crypto Surge

Cryptocurrency markets continued to rally, led by Bitcoin (BTC), which reached a new record high above $126,000 before consolidating near $124,966, up 1.2% for the session. Ethereum (ETH) gained 4% touching $4,738, demonstrating robust strength as institutional inflows into digital assets accelerated. The rally was underpinned by continued optimism surrounding spot Bitcoin ETFs, favorable U.S. policy developments, and rising geopolitical uncertainty. Keep an eye on Ethereum and Ethereum-related products, especially if this big weekly setup starts to break out to new all-time highs. BMNR and the ETFs remain featured in today’s daily setups. Also, keep SUI on a watchlist as price action sets up near the apex of a multi-month base.

Commodity Watch

Commodities rallied broadly, reflecting a resurgence in inflation-sensitive assets. Crude oil rose 1.55% to $61.82 per barrel after OPEC+ announced a smaller-than-expected output increase of 137,000 barrels per day for November. The restrained hike tempered concerns over a potential supply glut and supported prices across the energy complex.

Gold surged 1.9% to $3,969.52 per ounce, driven by safe-haven demand amid the U.S. government shutdown and political turmoil in Europe. Silver followed higher, while copper prices stabilized after recent weakness. The Global X Uranium ETF (URA) remained firm, continuing to trade above its upward-sloping moving averages, underscoring the sector’s longer-term structural strength.

Sector & Thematic Movers

AI and semiconductor stocks dominated Monday’s action following a landmark partnership between Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and OpenAI, which saw AMD agree to supply six gigawatts of AI chips and issue warrants for up to 160 million shares. AMD shares surged 23.7%, sparking rallies in Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), Astera Labs (ALAB), and Sanmina (SANM).

Technology led all sectors, supported by gains in Microsoft (MSFT) and Palantir (PLTR) following OpenAI’s developer conference, which highlighted expanded integration across enterprise applications. The energy and materials sectors also advanced, bolstered by rising oil and gold prices. Conversely, real estate and consumer staples lagged as investors favored growth and momentum plays.

Stock Movers

Among key movers, AMD (AMD) stole the spotlight, soaring on the OpenAI deal that reignited enthusiasm for AI infrastructure names. Tesla (TSLA) gained 5.5% after teasing a Tuesday announcement, while Palantir (PLTR) rebounded 3.7%, signaling renewed investor interest.

In the software space, UiPath (PATH) and Salesforce (CRM) rose after being referenced during OpenAI’s keynote event. AppLovin (APP) plunged 14.1% following reports of an SEC investigation into its data practices. Emcor (EME) and DoorDash (DASH) posted bullish moves as both continued to strengthen within technical setups.

Options & Insider Flow

Bullish sentiment was reinforced by aggressive call and put-selling activity across multiple names. Notably, AMD recorded heavy call buying aligned with its fundamental catalyst, while Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) experienced bullish put-option selling, suggesting confidence in a potential bottoming pattern. PayPal (PYPL), Trade Desk (TTD), and SoFi Technologies (SOFI) also saw concentrated bullish flow, signaling accumulation in the growth space.

Insider activity remained supportive, with notable purchases across small-cap technology and energy sectors. Institutional flows continued favoring AI, crypto, and commodity-linked equities, suggesting a broad appetite for cyclical growth exposure.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small-cap stocks extended their recent strength, with the Russell 2000 joining the S&P 500 at record levels. Speculative appetite was reflected in strong moves across BitMine Immersion (BMNR), BTQ Technologies (BTQ), and Opendoor Technologies (OPEN). Energy and resource names, including Peyto Exploration (PEY.TO) and Anaergia (ANRG.TO), continued to consolidate in bullish formations.

Momentum extended to AI-adjacent and crypto-linked small caps, with SoundHound AI (SOUN) and Bitdeer Technologies (BTDR) holding above key support levels. The persistent rotation into speculative equities underscored the market’s broader risk-on tone.

Conclusion

Monday’s session reinforced the strength of the “everything rally,” as equities, commodities, and crypto assets moved higher in tandem. With the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closing at record highs and the TSX setting new milestones, investor appetite for growth and risk remains resilient.

AI enthusiasm, robust commodity demand, and accelerating institutional participation in digital assets continue to define this phase of the bull market. While extended conditions suggest the potential for short-term pullbacks, the underlying structure of strength across sectors, regions, and asset classes remains intact. As markets digest upcoming Federal Reserve minutes and geopolitical developments, focus will shift toward earnings season for confirmation of this risk-on narrative’s durability.
