SYS Daily Report

Stocks Rally as Labor Market Softens and Rate Cut Bets Rise

U.S. equities advanced broadly on Thursday as investors positioned ahead of the August jobs report, with softer labor market data reinforcing expectations for imminent Federal Reserve easing. Weekly jobless claims climbed to 237,000, while the ADP report showed just 54,000 private payroll additions, both weaker than anticipated. Futures markets priced in a near-certainty of a September rate cut, with traders also boosting odds of multiple cuts into year-end. Treasury yields retreated, with the 10-year yield sliding to 4.17%, its lowest level since April. The 2-year yield fell to 3.59%, extending a week-long decline. The U.S. dollar edged modestly higher despite weaker data, as investors squared positions ahead of Friday’s payrolls report, but it is lower after hours.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Market breadth improved as advancing issues outnumbered decliners across both the NYSE and Nasdaq, signaling stronger participation after recent consolidation. The S&P 500 gained 0.8%, closing at a record high, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 350 points (0.8%). The Russell 2000 added 1.3%, pushing closer to 2025 highs. Breadth indicators reflected positive internals, with most sectors advancing and volume expanding on the NYSE.

TSX Recap

The TSX Composite Index rose 0.6% to another record close at 28,915.89, extending its winning streak to seven sessions—the longest since May. Gains were led by technology, with Descartes Systems Group (DSG.TO) surging more than 7% after exceeding revenue forecasts. Financials and real estate also contributed, while energy remained supported by higher gold-linked miners. The Canadian 10-year yield slipped to 3.34%, reflecting easing rate expectations alongside U.S. markets.

Crypto Surge

Cryptocurrencies traded lower after Nasdaq tightened oversight of listed digital-asset treasury companies, requiring shareholder approval before issuing new shares to fund crypto purchases. The announcement pressured related equities: MicroStrategy (MSTR) finished down 0.9%, BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR) fell 6.0%, and SharpLink Gaming (SBET) declined 8.3% as investors reassessed governance and dilution risk tied to crypto-heavy balance sheets.

The weakness extended across major tokens, with Bitcoin (BTC) down 0.9%, Ethereum (ETH) lower by 3.3%, and Solana (SOL) off 3.9% into the close, reflecting a broad risk reset alongside the new oversight framework. However, many are green after hours.

Commodity Watch

Commodities were mixed as macro crosscurrents shaped trading. Crude oil futures fell for a second straight session, with WTI settling at $63.34 per barrel and Brent at $66.99, pressured by rising U.S. inventories and speculation OPEC+ may lift output targets. Copper softened in line with global growth concerns, while gold and silver eased slightly after touching record levels, with gold holding near $3,543 per ounce.

Sector & Thematic Movers

All but one of the 11 S&P 500 sectors finished higher, led by consumer discretionary and communication services. Amazon (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) advanced sharply, boosting discretionary stocks. Technology remained firm with Broadcom (AVGO) climbing ahead of earnings, while Micron Technology (MU) jumped 4.6% on renewed semiconductor momentum. Utilities lagged as yields declined. The Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) gained 1.05%, while the SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) surged 3.2%.

Stock Movers

Single-name action was active. Amazon (AMZN) surged 4.3%, supported by its AI initiatives and steady e-commerce performance. Netflix (NFLX) rose 2.6%, regaining technical momentum, while Shopify (SHOP) added 3.5% in Toronto trading. Robinhood (HOOD) gained 2.1% as it consolidated above key averages. Broadcom (AVGO) edged higher after hours on earnings and a $10 billion AI chip order. In Canada, NuVista Energy (NVA.TO) and Brookfield (BN.TO) consolidated near breakout structures, while Hydreight Technologies (NURS.V) continued to make fresh highs.

Options & Insider Flow

Options markets reflected strong bullish positioning. Heavy put selling dominated Eli Lilly (LLY), with over $137 million in premium collected, reinforcing confidence in price stability. Substantial call buying drove flows in BlackRock (BLK), Alphabet (GOOG/GOOGL), and Amazon (AMZN). Intuit (INTU) and Etsy (ETSY) also saw notable put selling. Unusual trades included aggressive out-of-the-money call buying in Eaton (ETN), iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA), and Robinhood (HOOD), all flagged as new institutional positioning.

Insider activity was mixed. Large purchases were reported at Resideo Technologies (REZI) and Triplepoint Venture Growth (TPVG) in the U.S., while Canadian insiders added to positions in Atlas Engineered Products (AEP) and Cardinal Energy (CJ). On the sell side, Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella disposed of more than $70 million in stock, while Shopify (SHOP) executives sold shares totaling over $2.6 million.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small caps rebounded strongly, with the Russell 2000 advancing 1.3%. Action highlighted speculative appetite in biotech and technology. Affirm (AFRM) and Reddit (RDDT) both featured unusual options activity, reflecting heightened institutional positioning. In Canada, small-cap momentum continued with Anaergia (ANRG.TO) and Hydreight Technologies (NURS.V) extending their rallies, underscoring speculative strength in niche growth names.

Conclusion

Markets closed near record highs as weakening labor data bolstered expectations for a September rate cut. Breadth strengthened, with gains across major indexes and leadership in discretionary, technology, and financials. The TSX extended its streak of record closes, supported by technology and financials, while commodities reflected mixed signals from energy weakness and precious metals resilience. Options flow and insider activity suggested continued bullish sentiment, particularly in large-cap technology and healthcare. With Friday’s August jobs report looming, investor focus turns to whether labor softness confirms the path for aggressive policy easing into year-end.
