S&P 500 Eases Off Record High as Tech Stocks Dip Ahead of Earnings Surge

The S&P 500 took a step back from its record high as technology shares slipped, creating a sense of anticipation among investors awaiting earnings reports from industry giants. On the flip side, the Dow Jones Industrial Average marked another milestone on Tuesday, while the Nasdaq experienced a decline.

The S&P 500 benchmark index dipped slightly by 0.06% on Tuesday, whereas the Dow gained 0.35%, or 134 points, setting a new record. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, however, had its worst day in almost four weeks, falling by 0.76%.

Post-market activity saw Microsoft and Google-parent Alphabet reporting, focusing on their progress in artificial intelligence. Microsoft’s stock experienced a fractional decline after reporting fiscal second-quarter earnings. Sales rose by 18% to $62 billion, with earnings per share of $2.93, a 23% increase, both exceeding estimates. Google’s stock, on the other hand, tumbled 4% after hours, despite reporting sales growth of 13% to $86.3 billion and a 56% jump in earnings to $1.64 per share—both surpassing expectations. However, the company’s core advertising business fell short of estimates, leading to a dip in shares during the regular session on Tuesday.

In the bond markets, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note ticked down to 4.056% on Tuesday from 4.089% on Monday, following the inverse relationship between bond yields and prices. The benchmark closed at 4.059%
