Global Markets Steady Amid Energy Volatility While Technology and Metals Show Relative Strength
Client Update
This evening, I will be speaking at the Canadian Association of Technical Analysts meeting. The session will take place from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM Eastern Time.
For those interested in attending, registration is available through the CATA website.
Macro Overview
Global markets navigated a volatile session shaped by developments tied to Middle East tensions, shifting energy prices, and ongoing attention to upcoming economic data. Equity markets in Asia and Europe displayed firm participation, while U.S. markets moved in a more restrained fashion as investors digested a series of rapid geopolitical headlines and large swings in commodity markets.
Energy markets remained the focal point of macro developments, with crude oil experiencing sharp intraday swings before stabilizing later in the session. Treasury markets showed modest pressure as yields edged higher following a softer government debt auction. Currency markets reflected a slightly weaker US Dollar as some safe-haven demand eased.
Market participants also looked ahead to upcoming inflation data that could influence interest rate expectations. While policy expectations remained broadly stable, attention remains focused on how inflation data and energy price volatility may shape future monetary policy decisions.

Breadth & Major Index Charts
Market breadth reflected a cautious tone as participation remained mixed across major U.S. benchmarks. Early optimism faded through the session as geopolitical headlines drove intermittent swings in risk sentiment.
The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System suggested a session defined more by rotation than broad directional conviction. Declining issues slightly outpaced advancing issues across several exchanges while new highs and new lows remained balanced.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished weaker while the S&P 500 also moved lower after surrendering earlier gains. The Nasdaq held near unchanged levels as strength in semiconductor-related names helped offset weakness across software stocks. Smaller companies also lagged as the Russell 2000 drifted lower following stronger intraday levels.
Technology companies including Nvidia (NVDA) and Sandisk (SNDK) showed relative leadership during the session, while industrial and financial components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average produced mixed results.

TSX Recap
Canadian markets extended their recent stabilization, with the TSX finishing higher for a second consecutive session. Gains in financial and materials shares helped offset weakness in energy producers as commodity markets experienced significant volatility.
Precious metal miners led the way as gold strengthened during the session. Financial shares also contributed to the advance, although the sector experienced notable dispersion following a sharp decline in goeasy Ltd. (GSY.TO) after the company issued an update regarding credit losses and capital allocation changes.
Energy shares declined in response to the drop in crude oil prices. Technology stocks also weighed on the index, including weakness in Shopify (SHOP.TO). Industrial shares experienced pressure as Thomson Reuters (TRI.TO) traded lower.
Resource themes remained visible across Canadian equities with uranium exposure through Cameco (CCO.TO) maintaining attention alongside mining-related companies such as Almonty Industries (AII.TO) and American Tungsten (TUNG.CA), both of which continued to attract interest due to their positioning within strategic metals supply chains.

Digital Assets Overview
Digital asset markets stabilized after recent volatility, with several major cryptocurrencies moving higher during the session. Risk sentiment across digital assets improved alongside broader financial markets while institutional activity continued to attract attention.
Bitcoin (BTC) moved higher as flows into digital asset investment vehicles resumed and broader market sentiment improved. Ethereum (ETH) also strengthened amid continued institutional accumulation activity. The asset attracted attention following a large purchase by a digital asset investment vehicle linked to institutional investors.
Among alternative cryptocurrencies, Solana (SOL) moved higher during the session alongside broader strength across digital assets. Price action is approaching a similar resistance area that several major digital assets are facing. Monitor whether the price across the digital asset market can break out and sustain the move.
The stabilization across major digital assets coincided with renewed interest in crypto-related equities, including Core Scientific (CORZ) and Bitfarms (BITF), both of which were also highlighted in options activity during the session.

Commodity Watch
Commodity markets experienced the most dramatic price swings of the session as energy markets reacted sharply to developments surrounding shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz.
Crude oil futures declined sharply earlier in the session, then partially stabilized later in the day as geopolitical headlines shifted throughout the trading day. The volatility reflected how sensitive energy markets remain to developments involving the Middle East and global shipping routes.
Precious metals moved in the opposite direction, with gold strengthening while the US Dollar eased modestly. The move helped support mining-related equities in Canada and reinforced the safe-haven positioning of precious metals during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
Silver also attracted attention through activity in iShares Silver Trust (SLV) and ProShares Ultra Silver (AGQ) following options activity tied to the sector.
Copper remained relatively stable while strategic metals themes continued to influence several mining and resource companies across global markets.
Uranium-related equities remained in focus, with the Global X Uranium ETF (URA) alongside underlying companies such as Cameco (CCO.TO), as investors continued to monitor developments across nuclear energy supply chains.

Sector & Thematic Movers
Technology infrastructure remained one of the strongest themes during the session. Semiconductor and hardware-related companies demonstrated resilience while software companies lagged.
Semiconductor leaders such as Nvidia (NVDA) and ASML Holding (ASML) moved higher alongside storage-related companies, including Sandisk (SNDK) and Western Digital (WDC). Infrastructure supplier Powell Industries (POWL) also continued to show strength.
Artificial intelligence infrastructure remained a central theme following earnings from Oracle (ORCL), which advanced in post-market trading after reporting stronger results and providing a constructive outlook tied to cloud growth.
Renewable energy and clean technology companies also attracted attention. Enphase Energy (ENPH) rebounded from a key moving average, while Bloom Energy (BE) appeared in options flow tied to call buying activity.
Resource themes extended across several industries, including uranium, critical minerals, and rare earths. Companies such as MP Materials (MP), Critical Metals (CRML), USA Rare Earth (USAR), and U S Antimony (UAMY) remained in focus due to their strategic positioning in materials supply chains.
Stock Movers
Several individual companies experienced notable activity during the session due to earnings updates, sector leadership, and technical developments.
Technology infrastructure names remained prominent as Oracle (ORCL) moved higher following its earnings release. Semiconductor leader Nvidia (NVDA) also advanced as it approached resistance near a key technical area.
Data center related companies including DigitalOcean (DOCN) continued to gain attention following unusual options activity and sustained upward momentum.
In the materials and mining space, uranium producer Cameco (CCO.TO) maintained relative strength, while critical minerals companies such as MP Materials (MP) and Critical Metals (CRML) showed signs of technical consolidation.
Defense and robotics-related company Kraken Robotics (PNG.V) approached a potential breakout from consolidation, while Unusual Machines (UMAC) continued to experience increased trading activity.
Energy services company ProFrac (ACDC) and internet infrastructure firm Cloudflare (NET) both approached potential breakout levels as their technical setups developed.

Options & Insider Flow
Institutional options activity reflected strong bullish positioning across a wide range of technology and infrastructure companies. Large block trades highlighted substantial call buying and put selling activity among several major technology companies.
Significant options flow appeared in companies including Microsoft (MSFT), Tesla (TSLA), Broadcom (AVGO), Micron Technology (MU), Amazon (AMZN), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Alphabet (GOOG), and Meta Platforms (META). The activity reflected continued institutional interest in large technology platforms.
Energy and infrastructure-related companies also appeared in options activity, including Blackstone (BX) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW).
Longer duration options trades drew attention in digital infrastructure companies such as Core Scientific (CORZ), while pharmaceutical company Pfizer (PFE) also appeared in significant block trades.
Insider activity across North American markets included purchases in companies such as Eos Energy (EOSE) and Lakeland Financial (LKFN), while insider selling activity occurred across a wide range of companies, including Bentley Systems (BSY), Target (TGT), Linde (LIN), Snowflake (SNOW), and Wayfair (W).
In Canada, insider purchases occurred at companies such as Vermilion Energy (VET.TO), Onex (ONEX.TO), and Baytex Energy (BTE.TO), while selling activity occurred at companies including Paramount Resources (POU.TO) and Intact Financial (IFC.TO).
Small Cap Spotlight
Small-cap stocks showed selective strength during the session, as several emerging companies drew attention due to unusual options activity and technical setups.
Resource exploration companies including American Tungsten (TUNG.CA) and Itafos (IFOS.V) continued to show elevated trading activity. Defense technology company Kraken Robotics (PNG.V) also remained in focus as the stock approached a potential breakout from consolidation.
Technology-oriented small caps such as Ocean Power Technologies (OPTT) and DeFi Development (DFDV) saw notable options activity, with call buying across several expiration dates.
Healthcare company Capricor Therapeutics (CAPR) and biotechnology firm Erasca (ERAS) also appeared in options flow tied to call buying activity, reflecting continued investor interest in select biotechnology names.
Conclusion
Global markets navigated a volatile session shaped primarily by geopolitical developments and sharp swings in energy prices. Equity benchmarks ultimately finished the day mixed as investors balanced improving sentiment in technology infrastructure and materials sectors against persistent uncertainty tied to geopolitical headlines.
Leadership from semiconductor companies, resource producers, and digital asset-related equities highlighted areas where investors continued to position for potential continuation in longer-term themes. At the same time, uneven breadth across major indexes reflected a market that remains sensitive to external developments.
As markets look ahead, attention will likely remain focused on geopolitical developments, inflation data, and the evolving technical posture of major indexes as investors assess whether recent volatility transitions into broader consolidation or renewed directional movement.
