SYS Daily Report
Major Indexes Pull Back Amid Earnings Woes and Commodity Slumps
The U.S. stock market experienced notable losses on Tuesday, with major indexes declining due to a combination of weak earnings guidance from chip equipment giant ASML and a drop in oil prices. The S&P 500 fell 0.8%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 325 points, or 0.8%, weighed down mainly by disappointing results from UnitedHealth Group. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost 1%, with semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), pulling back after ASML‘s weaker-than-expected outlook for next year. Bank stocks, however, showed resilience as Bank of America and Goldman Sachs posted strong earnings, providing a bright spot amid the broader sell-off.
S&P 500 – Daily Chart

Dow Jones Industrial Average – Daily Chart

Nasdaq – Daily Chart

In Canada, the S&P/TSX Composite Index ended 0.1% lower, closing at 24,439.08. The pullback followed a drop in crude oil prices, which weighed on Canada’s commodity-centric index. The energy sector experienced a steep decline of 4.8%, led by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, which fell 5.7%. On a more positive note, Canada’s annual inflation rate cooled to 1.6% in September, which bolstered expectations for a 50-basis-point interest rate cut by the Bank of Canada next week. Real estate and utilities sectors, which stand to benefit from lower rates, rose 1.4% and 1.9%, respectively.
TSX – Daily Chart

Gold saw gains as investors sought safe-haven assets amidst equity market weakness and geopolitical concerns. Front-month gold futures rose 0.5% to $2,661.40 per ounce, while SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) also gained 0.5%. The flight to gold was driven by increased uncertainty around the Israel-Iran tensions, upcoming U.S. elections, and China‘s efforts to revive its economy through stimulative measures. One could expect gold prices to remain elevated as China’s new stimulus provides continued support.
Gold – Daily Chart

Oil prices plunged following reports that Israel assured the U.S. it would not target Iranian nuclear or oil facilities, alleviating fears of a major supply disruption. WTI crude fell 4.4% to $70.58 per barrel, while Brent crude dropped 4.1% to $74.25 per barrel. The decision minimized the risk of an Iranian retaliatory strike that could disrupt key oil passages, easing some geopolitical risk premium. Weak demand further reduced the impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on oil prices.
Crude Oil – Weekly Chart

In the currency markets, the U.S. dollar resumed its upward trajectory, reaching a two-month high as expectations grew for modest interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve over the next 18 months. The dollar index rose to 103.26, boosted partly by comments from Fed Governor Chris Waller, who suggested caution on further rate cuts. The euro dropped to its lowest level since August at $1.0882, ahead of the upcoming European Central Bank policy meeting, while the British pound saw a slight uptick to $1.3068. The Japanese yen weakened to 149.25 against the dollar, pressured by dovish comments from Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda. Oil-exporting currencies, such as the Norwegian crown and Canadian dollar, also softened after the sharp oil price drop. Keep an eye on the price of Bitcoin as it sets up for a potential breakout.
Bitcoin – Daily Chart

Bond yields also drew attention, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield declining to 4.04%. Falling yields generally benefit equities, particularly rate-sensitive sectors such as technology and real estate, by making borrowing cheaper and improving valuation metrics. However, despite the drop in yields, the technology sector did not see gains today, as broader concerns weighed heavily on sentiment. The decline in yields also indicates increased investor appetite for safer assets amidst broader economic concerns, adding a layer of support to the market similar to the uptick in gold as a safe-haven asset.
10-Year US Treasury Yield

As earnings season progresses, market sentiment remains highly sensitive to corporate guidance and economic data. Today’s sell-off across sectors like technology and energy likely triggered several stop-loss orders, moving many investors to cash positions. This highlights the need for disciplined risk management—using well-placed stop levels can help protect gains and limit losses during periods of heightened volatility. As Paul Tudor Jones once said, “The most important thing is to have a plan, and that plan should always include a stop-loss to guard against the unexpected.”
Now, onto the daily setups.
