SYS Daily Report

Dow Breaks New Ground as Shutdown Resolution Nears; Precious Metals Surge While Tech Lags

Markets advanced unevenly as momentum grew toward ending the record-length U.S. government shutdown. The House moved toward approving a temporary funding bill extending operations through late January, which would allow delayed economic data—such as the September employment release—to resume. Several October indicators, including inflation and unemployment, may never be published due to gaps in data collection during the shutdown. Treasury yields eased, policymakers expressed differing views on the appropriate path for rates into December, and the U.S. dollar traded mixed against major currencies as investors assessed incoming policy signals and the pending wave of delayed data.

10-Year US Treasury Yield – Daily Chart

The benchmark yield declined toward 4.065%, reflecting continued demand for longer-dated government securities while markets await the resumption of official data releases.

US Dollar – Daily Chart

The U.S. dollar slipped slightly against the euro while strengthening toward a nine-month high against the yen, which faced pressure amid speculation that Japan’s central bank may delay future tightening steps.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Breadth was constructive outside of megacap technology. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 48,000 for the first time, supported by strength in financials, healthcare, and select industrials. The S&P 500 was little-changed, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.3% as large technology stocks weighed on performance. Equal-weight index measures continued to show healthier participation, suggesting sturdier underlying market tone even as growth sectors weakened.

The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System

Breadth leaned supportive, with multiple sectors displaying improving structure despite a drag from large-cap technology.

S&P 500 – Daily Chart

The index held steady, reflecting a balanced session where strength in financials, healthcare, and materials offset softness in technology.

Nasdaq – Daily Chart

The Nasdaq declined 0.3%, pressured by broad weakness in Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon.com (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), NVIDIA (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA).

Dow Jones Industrial Average – Daily Chart

The Dow advanced 0.7%, supported by firm moves in Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS), UnitedHealth Group (UNH), and Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) following upbeat earnings.

Russell 2000 (ETF) – Daily Chart

The small-cap index edged lower, reflecting cautious appetite for more speculative areas of the market.

TSX Recap

Canadian equities surged to new all-time highs, with the TSX Composite Index rising 1.4% to 30,827.58. All ten major sectors advanced. Materials led with a 3.4% gain as precious metals strengthened, mirrored in setups such as Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX.TO) and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX), both attempting to extend bullish continuation structures. Consumer staples and financials also contributed to the advance, highlighted by a 3.7% rise in Loblaw Companies (L.TO) and steady movement in names like Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO) and Manulife Financial Corp. (MFC.TO). Energy finished modestly higher even as oil prices declined. Shares of Baytex Energy (BTE.TO) jumped 13.6% after announcing a planned sale of U.S. Eagle Ford assets.

TSX – Daily Chart

Digital Assets Overview

Crypto markets were mixed, with major tokens drifting lower amid broad risk rotation and wide intraday ranges. Bitcoin (BTC) traded to horizontal support, Ethereum (ETH) is fighting to hold the 200-day moving average, and Solana (SOL) continues to chop lower in its range. Conditions remained volatile across smaller tokens, with several exhibiting double-digit swings.

Commodity Watch

Precious metals delivered standout performance. Silver surged 3.9% to a record $53.22, while gold also strengthened as the materials sector outperformed globally. In contrast, crude oil fell 4.3% to $58.43, extending recent declines amid indications of rising inventories. The performance of copper and related miners remained constructive, reflected in setups such as the Global X Copper Miners ETF (COPX), which continued to form a bullish continuation structure.

Sector & Thematic Movers

Financials outperformed broadly, with strong moves in Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), Citigroup Inc. (C), Morgan Stanley (MS), and Charles Schwab Corp. (SCHW). Healthcare names also advanced, while industrials and materials contributed positively to overall breadth. Technology, especially high-valuation and AI-related infrastructure names, lagged significantly. Airlines saw notable gains. Metals and mining stocks benefited from strong moves in gold and silver, highlighted in setups such as Global X Silver Miners ETF (SIL) and Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX.TO).

Stock Movers

Large-cap technology stocks weighed on growth indices. Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet (GOOG), Oracle Corp. (ORCL), Palantir Technologies (PLTR), and Tesla (TSLA) all posted declines. Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) rose 9%, continuing to trade constructively above its upward-sloping moving averages after updated AI-chip growth expectations. Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) advanced 3.1% following stronger-than-expected earnings and guidance. In Canada, Loblaw Companies (L.TO) and Baytex Energy (BTE.TO) were session leaders.

Among setups, SoFi Technologies, Inc. (SOFI) continued to trade above its rising moving averages as it approaches a potential new 52-week high, while Opendoor Technologies Inc. (OPEN) continued coiling near resistance with improving momentum. United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) displayed improving structure on the right side of a potential bottoming formation.

Options & Insider Flow

Institutional options flow remained firmly bullish. Large call-premium inflows were concentrated in FFIV, DUOL, AMD, NVDA, MSFT, LRN, and UPS. Strong put-selling activity added bullish positioning in META, MU, BX, GOOG, FCX, and SOFI.

Individual unusual trades included notable call accumulation in ETHE, ALB, AKBA, LLY, MDLZ, ROP, JMIA, MLYS, AIRS, and EVH, with several contracts exceeding prior open interest. Bullish put selling was recorded in RRC and KSS.

Insider activity was active across U.S. and Canadian markets. Significant U.S. insider purchases included ROP, GBFH, DKNG, OPEN, AMCR, HUN, PRMB, KMPR, and BDN. Major U.S. insider sales occurred in ROL, SHC, LLY, INCY, MEDP, and STX.

Canadian insider buying was led by CJT.TO, TRIP.CA, RCH.TO, and additional junior resource names.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small caps showed mixed performance, with wide ranges across speculative-growth segments. Several high-volatility technology and AI-infrastructure names weakened alongside the Nasdaq, while small-cap miners outperformed in line with strength in precious metals. Flow activity highlighted continued interest in names such as Arbe Robotics Ltd. (ARBE), Akebia Therapeutics, Inc. (AKBA), Mineralys Therapeutics, Inc. (MLYS), Jumia Technologies AG (JMIA), and Opendoor Technologies Inc. (OPEN), where call inflows exceeded prior open interest.

Conclusion

Markets delivered a divided session marked by record highs in the Dow, strong participation across financials and materials, and sharp gains in precious metals, while megacap technology dragged on growth indices. The TSX set a new high with broad-based sector strength, and crypto markets traded with wide intraday ranges. Options and insider activity skewed decisively bullish across a range of sectors, reinforcing the session’s constructive undertone. As markets await the return of delayed economic data, attention turns to rotation trends, sector leadership, and the durability of breadth outside the large-cap technology complex.
