Wall Street Rallies as Supreme Court Tariff Doubts Lift Sentiment

U.S. markets advanced on Wednesday as investors weighed firm economic data, a stronger U.S. dollar, and Supreme Court arguments questioning President Trump’s tariff authority. The yield on the 10-Year U.S. Treasury climbed to 4.16%, its highest since early October, marking the largest single-day rise in nearly four months. The 2-Year Treasury rose to 3.63%, while the 30-Year reached 4.74%, extending the recent selloff in bonds. The move reflected a repricing in rate expectations following a stronger-than-expected ADP employment report, which showed private payrolls rising by 42,000 in October.

The U.S. dollar hovered near a five-month high, with the Dollar Index at 100.13 after gaining roughly 1.5% over the past week. Currency traders cited firm economic data and ongoing skepticism over deeper rate cuts this year as reasons for the dollar’s strength. Sterling steadied ahead of the Bank of England’s policy decision, while the yen weakened modestly after early gains.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Equities rallied broadly, supported by a rebound in technology and trade-sensitive sectors after the Supreme Court signaled doubts over Trump’s ability to sustain sweeping tariffs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 225 points (0.5%), the S&P 500 gained 0.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.65%. The Russell 2000 climbed 1.5%, showing strength among smaller names.

The S&P 500 closed above its 50-day moving average for the 131st consecutive session, extending the longest streak since 2007. Breadth improved as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by more than two-to-one on both the NYSE and Nasdaq, signaling a recovery in participation following Tuesday’s selloff.

Technically, the indexes are maintaining upward trajectories, with the Nasdaq regaining momentum in AI-linked names and the Dow finding support from industrial leaders like Amgen (AMGN) and Caterpillar (CAT).

TSX Recap

The TSX Composite Index surged 1.1% to 30,103.48, its strongest performance in three weeks. Strength in gold and technology drove the advance, while every major sector ended higher. The materials group gained 2.7% as gold prices climbed 1.3%, and the technology sector added 2.9%, supported by a 5.1% rise in Celestica (CLS.TO). Energy shares were lifted by a 1.6% rebound in crude oil, with Suncor Energy (SU.TO) up 4.3% following earnings.

The session marked a technical recovery from recent lows, with the index rebounding from near six-week lows. Broad-based participation signaled renewed confidence ahead of upcoming Canadian employment and inflation data.

Digital Assets Overview

Major cryptocurrencies rebounded from horizontal support lines after steep losses yesterday. Smaller-cap altcoins displayed sharp intraday swings, with names such as ZKsync (ZK) and Decred (DCR) gaining over 30%. Market sentiment was mixed, as total crypto market capitalization edged lower by roughly 2.6%, but institutional narratives around tokenization and ETF filings continued to attract attention. Now, it’s key to see if price can hold yesterday’s low and start to reclaim overhead resistance levels. As the CMT teaches, it’s crucial to react to price and not make predictions.

Commodity Watch

Commodities presented a mixed tone. Crude oil futures declined 1.5% to US$59.64 per barrel after U.S. inventories rose by 5.2 million barrels, offsetting prior draws. Brent crude slipped 1.4% to US$63.52. Gold rebounded 1%, but remains below its downward-sloping 21-day exponential moving average, which now acts as a signal line — price action above this level would indicate a “green-light,” while a move below continues to represent a “red-light” condition. Silver posted a smaller uptick yet faces similar resistance at its 21-day EMA. Copper traded slightly higher amid steady industrial data.

Uranium-related equities, represented by the Global X Uranium ETF, are now attempting to hold above the lower boundary of a consolidation pattern, with price action testing key trendline support.

Sector & Thematic Movers

Technology, consumer discretionary, and materials sectors led gains across U.S. markets. Amgen (AMGN) surged 7.8% following upbeat quarterly results, while Caterpillar (CAT) added 3.9% after outlining aggressive growth targets. In the retail space, Williams-Sonoma (WSM) rose 2.6%, supported by strength among trade-sensitive names such as General Motors (GM) and Ford (F), which each gained over 2%.

Meanwhile, the energy, financial, and communications groups advanced modestly. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed 3%, underscoring renewed enthusiasm in chip-related names, including Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Broadcom (AVGO).

Stock Movers

Earnings announcements remained a major driver of stock-level action. Robinhood (HOOD), AppLovin (APP), ARM Holdings (ARM), and DoorDash (DASH) were active after reporting results. AppLovin and SiTime (SITM) posted gains, while DoorDash and Qualcomm (QCOM) declined on weaker outlooks.

Rivian (RIVN) surged 23% after delivering an unexpected gross profit, while Pinterest (PINS) fell 22% on tariff-related advertising weakness. McDonald’s (MCD) rose 2.2%, and Match Group (MTCH) jumped 5.2% after issuing quarterly updates.

Among decliners, Super Micro Computer (SMCI) slipped 11.3% on disappointing results, though Johnson Controls (JCI) advanced 8.8% following stronger guidance.

Options & Insider Flow

Institutional options flow reflected a robust bullish tilt. Large call premium inflows were recorded across Alphabet (GOOGL), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and NVIDIA (NVDA), while heavy put selling activity in Sunrun (RUN) and Sable Offshore (SOC) reinforced confidence in underlying price stability. Alphabet led total premium activity with US$32.9 million in net inflows, followed by AMD at US$15.6 million.

Individual trades highlighted new bullish positioning in Cipher Mining (CIFR), IREN (IREN), and Palantir (PLTR), where call purchases and put sales exceeded prior open interest. Notable premium collection also appeared in Amgen (AMGN) and The Goldman Sachs Group (GS) through large put sales.

Insider activity leaned positive, with significant U.S. purchases by Carl Icahn in Monro (MNRO), Robert Hamilton Steers in Cohen & Steers (CNS), and James Breyer in Blackstone (BX). In Canada, key purchases were observed in Secure Waste Infrastructure (SES), South Star Battery Metals (STS), and Sigma Lithium (SGML). Major U.S. insider sales included Corebridge Financial (CRBG) and UWM Holdings (UWMC).

Institutional filings revealed ownership increases by Vanguard Group in Cisco Systems (CSCO), Starbucks (SBUX), and Par Pacific (PARR), alongside new stakes by Saba Capital, Norges Bank, and Oaktree Capital across select names.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Momentum in smaller capitalization stocks strengthened as risk appetite returned. The Russell 2000’s 1.5% gain reflected renewed speculative interest, aided by upside moves in Cipher Mining (CIFR), Sunrun (RUN), and Nebius Group (NBIS). Across Canadian small caps, Hydreight Technologies (NURS.V) and Abaxx Technologies (ABXX.NE) continued to demonstrate strong technical setups as they traded near prior highs.

Conclusion

Equity markets stabilized following a volatile start to the week, with breadth improving and investors rotating back into growth and cyclical themes. Treasury yields advanced alongside a firm dollar, while gold and technology shares led broader gains. The S&P 500’s sustained position above its key moving averages reinforced the market’s constructive technical posture.

With earnings season entering its final phase and macro attention turning to central bank meetings, the focus remains on whether markets can maintain momentum amid rising yields and persistent policy uncertainty.

“Momentum investors don’t argue with price; they follow it and know exactly where they’re wrong.” — Richard Dennis
