SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition
Inflation in Focus as Equities Rebound, Commodities Surge
I am releasing this report early, as I will be traveling, so these are not closing prices, and much can still change before the market wraps up the week. While today’s rebound is encouraging, the end of the quarter next week brings added uncertainty—always define risk, monitor for potential downside, and stay focused on the best setups that offer both momentum and clear risk parameters.
U.S. equities rebounded Friday from their 21-day exponential moving average after three consecutive sessions of weakness, as the core PCE price index rose 2.9% year-over-year in August, matching expectations. The data reinforced the conviction that the Federal Reserve is likely to proceed with another rate cut at its meeting on October 29. Treasury yields eased early in the session before edging higher, while the U.S. dollar stabilized after recent volatility but is currerntly red. Inflationary pressures tied to tariffs remain a concern; however, overall expectations lean toward continued monetary easing. The market tone improved in the afternoon as investors shifted their focus back to earnings resilience and fiscal incentives.

Breadth & Major Index Charts
Market breadth improved notably, with advancing issues outpacing decliners across both the NYSE and Nasdaq. The S&P 500 gained 0.6%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed nearly 0.8% (adding about 350 points), and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4%. Small-cap stocks outperformed, with the Russell 2000 up 0.8%, signaling renewed speculative appetite.

TSX Recap
The TSX Composite Index rose 0.1% to 29,773.68, putting it on track for an eighth consecutive week of gains. Domestic GDP data showed 0.2% growth in July following three months of contraction, led by mining, manufacturing, and wholesale trade. The technology index lagged, with Shopify (SHOP.TO) down 1%, while consumer non-cyclicals and gold miners advanced. Notable movers included Perpetua Resources (PPTA.TO) surging 17% on partnership discussions with global commodity firms, while NFI Group (NFI.TO) fell 12% after issuing a cautious business update. Broader strength across cyclicals and resources highlighted continued investor optimism despite sector rotation.

Crypto Surge
Crypto markets showed mixed signals. Bitcoin (BTC) held near $110,000, trading between $108,741 and $110,305 as it rebounded, up roughly 0.8%. Ethereum (ETH) outperformed, gaining 4.5% to approximately $4,052 from a support level, while Solana (SOL) rebounded 5% from its support level. Regulatory headlines, institutional ETF flows, and deleveraging in derivatives markets drove sentiment. A broader caution prevailed, but a selective strength highlighted the underlying accumulation.

Commodity Watch
Apologies, the StockChart.com service does not update futures contracts such as gold, silver, and oil until the end of the day, so I am using live charts from TradingView for accuracy.
Commodities gained momentum as safe-haven demand and geopolitical concerns lifted metals and energy. Crude oil advanced 1.05% to near $65.66 per barrel, supported by ongoing supply risks. Copper remained firm, reflecting steady industrial demand amid a modest rebound in global growth data. Gold surged to $3,809, up 2.8% for the week, marking its sixth straight weekly gain and the second-highest close on record. Silver accelerated higher, while uranium-linked equities tracked the Global X Uranium ETF with bullish option action in NexGen Energy (NXE).

Sector & Thematic Movers
Financials led U.S. equity gains, buoyed by optimism that easing inflation will preserve margins while benefiting from lower funding costs. Industrial names also outperformed, with Boeing (BA) jumping nearly 4% on reports the FAA will ease restrictions on aircraft deliveries. Tariff-sensitive sectors showed divergence: Paccar (PCAR) gained more than 5% as tariffs on imported trucks bolstered its domestic positioning, while retailers such as Wayfair (W) and RH (RH) saw mixed responses to furniture levies. Gold miners and energy shares continued to attract flows amid commodity strength.
Stock Movers
Tech names offered selective leadership, with Intel (INTC) up 2% and GlobalFoundries (GFS) surging nearly 9% after reports of new U.S. chip production rules aimed at reducing overseas reliance. Amazon (AMZN) rose 1%, rebounding from a four-day decline, while Merck (MRK) and Eli Lilly (LLY) advanced following tariff carveouts for U.S.-based pharmaceutical production. AppLovin (APP) gained 2.5% after a broker raised its price target, while Palantir (PLTR) and Costco (COST) retreated modestly.

Options & Insider Flow
Options markets reflected decisive bullish positioning. Institutional block flows were led by Tesla (TSLA) with over $11.2M in net premium favoring calls and put selling. MicroStrategy (MSTR) and Synopsys (SNPS) also showed strong bullish flows. Individual standout trades included Amazon (AMZN) call purchases across multiple expiries, Intel (INTC) out-of-the-money call buying, and heavy call activity in Rocket Companies (RKT) exceeding prior open interest. Insider transactions highlighted broad accumulation at Marvell Technology (MRVL), where executives added shares exceeding $1.8M in combined purchases, while Cipher Mining (CIFR) insiders sold positions worth over $40M. In Canada, notable buying was observed at Aya Gold & Silver (AYA) and Clairvest Group (CVG), while sales appeared in Taseko Mines (TKO) and TC Energy (TRP).
Small-Cap Spotlight
Small-cap participation improved alongside the broader rally. BitMine Immersion (BMNR) continued to attract options flow, with bullish call buying aligned to speculative positioning. BlackBerry (BB.TO) extended its breakout from a multi-month coil, supported by strong volume and momentum indicators. Draganfly (DPRO) advanced on cross-border options activity, and NexGen Energy (NXE) remained firm as investors accumulated exposure around a multi-year base. The Russell 2000’s leadership underscored improving risk appetite in speculative corners of the market.
Conclusion
Markets appear poised to close the week on a constructive note, overcoming concerns about inflation and geopolitical noise to stage a rebound in equities and commodities. Breadth improved across major indexes, led by financials, industrials, and resource-linked sectors. The TSX extended its winning streak, while U.S. small caps reasserted leadership. Crypto markets remained volatile but showed selective strength, and gold pressed toward record highs as investors sought hedges. Looking forward, monetary policy expectations, tariff implications, and corporate earnings will set the stage for the next phase of market direction, with volatility likely to remain elevated into October.
As always, the key is to remain disciplined—define risk clearly, respect downside signals, and focus only on setups where momentum aligns with well-structured risk management.
