SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition
Stocks Climb as Gold Surges to All-Time Highs, Energy Slumps
The stock market extended its rally on Friday, driven by strong earnings from Netflix and technological stock gains, while commodities like gold hit new highs. The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System is set up for a potential green-light cross. Investors also focused on positive economic signals from China despite lingering geopolitical uncertainties and upcoming U.S. elections.

The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System
U.S. Market Overview
On Friday, the Nasdaq Composite led the market, gaining 0.6% as Netflix shares soared over 11% following its strong earnings report. Tech giants like Apple and Intel also supported the broader market. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 added 0.4%, reaching an all-time high, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1%. These gains marked the sixth consecutive weekly increase for all three indexes, the longest winning streak since late 2023. Despite concerns about the U.S. election and geopolitical tensions, investors remained optimistic, particularly about corporate earnings and China’s latest stimulus measures. The Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks rose 1.9% for the week, hitting a two-year closing high on Wednesday, reflecting renewed investor confidence in smaller, growth-oriented companies.

Commodities: Gold Hits Record, Oil Declines
Precious metals saw a significant boost, with gold surpassing the $2,700 mark for the first time. Investor demand for safe-haven assets amid global uncertainties drove this surge. As a result, mining stocks in the materials sector performed strongly, with shares of IAMGOLD Corp jumping 16.6%, reaching a seven-year high. Silver followed gold’s lead, reaching $32.40 per ounce, further supported by its role as an industrial and precious metal. Thanks to China’s economic support efforts, copper prices climbed on Friday, mainly because of new liquidity measures to boost demand.

On the other hand, crude oil prices suffered their largest weekly drop in a month, falling 9% to $68.69 per barrel. Concerns over declining Chinese demand and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East weighed heavily on the energy sector, which was the worst performer on Friday.

Canadian Market Insights: TSX Benefits from Metals Rally
Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite Index hit a record close on Friday, adding 132.06 points (0.5%) to 24,822.54, its third straight day of gains. The TSX rose 1.4% for the week, marking its sixth consecutive weekly advance, the longest streak since April. The materials sector led the way, boosted by higher gold and copper prices. Shares of Magna International also rose 2.9%, pushing the consumer discretionary sector higher. In contrast, energy stocks pulled back, limiting the overall market advance.

Interest Rates and the U.S. Dollar
In the bond market, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield declined slightly or remained flat on the week at 4.073% as investors anticipate a more moderate easing cycle from the Federal Reserve. U.S. rate futures indicate a 95% probability of a 25-basis-point cut at the Fed’s next meeting. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar took a breather on Friday after five straight days of gains. However, the dollar remains on track for its third consecutive weekly gain, buoyed by strong U.S. economic data and expectations of fewer rate cuts.

Other Key Markets: Uranium and Bitcoin
The Global X Uranium ETF continued to rise, reflecting growing interest in nuclear energy as a key component of the global energy transition. Similarly, Bitcoin surged this week, with a potential breakout on the horizon. While media reports attribute the rally to expectations that a Trump victory could bring a more favorable regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies, the real driver likely mirrors the same factors pushing up gold and silver—growing demand for safe-haven assets amid global uncertainties and currency devaluation.

Bitcoin – Daily Chart
This week’s market activity underscored the resilience of equities, particularly in the technology and materials sectors, despite global uncertainties. The surge in gold and copper prices reflects ongoing concerns about global risks while declining crude oil prices highlight the challenges facing the energy sector. Investors should remain vigilant as central banks continue to adjust monetary policies and geopolitical events unfold. Diversification and focusing on sectors that continue to show strength, such as technology, commodities, and potentially Bitcoin, could prove crucial in navigating the uncertainties ahead.
