SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition
Powell’s Dovish Pivot Lifts Markets to Record Highs as Breadth and Risk Appetite Surge
Global markets ended the week on a strong note after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled that rate cuts may be warranted at the September meeting. While Powell emphasized that monetary policy remains data-dependent, his remarks at Jackson Hole underscored the growing risks in the labor market, where job growth has slowed meaningfully. The shift in tone sent equities broadly higher, yields lower, and risk appetite surging across asset classes. The 10-Year US Treasury Yield settled at 4.26%, down from 4.33% the previous day, while the US dollar weakened, easing financial conditions and lifting cyclical sectors.

Breadth & Major Index Charts
Breadth strengthened sharply as Powell’s comments triggered widespread buying. The S&P 500 rose 1.5% and closed at fresh highs, extending its year-to-date gain to 10%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 846 points (+1.9%) to its first record high of 2025, led by strength in Caterpillar (CAT), Home Depot (HD), and Goldman Sachs (GS). The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.9% on Friday, trimming its weekly loss to 0.6% as megacap technology stabilized. The Russell 2000 (IWM) jumped 3.9%, marking its best performance of the year and signaling revived appetite for smaller companies. Market internals were decisively positive, with advancing issues outnumbering decliners by more than 9-to-1 on the NYSE.

TSX Recap
The TSX Composite Index (TSX) climbed 0.99% to a record close at 28,333, marking its third straight weekly advance. Gains were broad-based, with the technology sector up 2.59% and energy rising 2.33%. Cenovus Energy (CVE.TO) surged 7.13% after announcing a C$7.9 billion acquisition of MEG Energy (MEG.TO), which added 1.23%. The TSX has now gained 14.6% year-to-date, supported by its heavy weighting in gold miners and energy producers. With global trade developments adding tailwinds, Canadian equities remain positioned to benefit from both commodity strength and easing US policy.

Crypto Surge
Digital assets staged a powerful rally following Powell’s remarks, as lower yields and a softer dollar boosted speculative appetite. Bitcoin advanced 4.2% to trade near $117,220, while Ethereum surged 14% to $4,789, setting a new intraday high. XRP gained 6.4%, Solana climbed 9.1%, and Dogecoin spiked 10%. The moves underscored the high correlation between cryptocurrencies and equities, with investors treating digital assets as high-beta plays on risk sentiment.
Bitcoin – Daily Chart
Bitcoin continues to chop around while the PPO momentum indicator attempts to hold the zero line. Price action has stalled at the underside of horizontal resistance and the downtrend line of the recent pattern. This now becomes a binary event—watch to see if price action can reclaim that level.

Ethereum – Daily Chart
Ethereum had a powerful surge, continuing to set up for a major breakout on the weekly chart pattern we’ve been highlighting. That pattern remains extremely bullish. On the daily chart, price action is pushing against resistance again and is extended away from its moving averages. This also becomes a binary event—monitor to see if price action can take out the recent high created on Friday.

Commodity Watch
Commodities extended gains as Powell’s dovish signal weakened the dollar and supported hard assets. Crude Oil (WTI) rose 1.54% on the week, closing at $63.77 a barrel, while Copper advanced modestly on firmer industrial demand expectations. Gold gained more than 1% weekly, benefiting from safe-haven flows alongside rate-cut optimism. Silver followed suit, extending its bullish momentum from the apex of its pattern. The uranium sector (URA ETF) continued to build strength, reflecting sustained institutional sponsorship and long-term demand expectations tied to nuclear power expansion as price action consolidates below a trigger line or horizontal resistance.

Sector & Thematic Movers
Sector rotation was decisive and broad. Consumer discretionary (XLY), energy (XLE), and communication services (XLC) led performance, while financials (XLF) and industrials (XLI) surged in response to falling yields. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) added 1.4% on defensive strength, while consumer staples (XLP) lagged as investors rotated toward growth. Notably, regional banks and housing-related equities showed strong momentum, signaling revived confidence in rate-sensitive areas of the market.
Stock Movers
Key equities reflected both macro drivers and company-specific catalysts. Tesla (TSLA) climbed 6.2% as it consolidated near the apex of a bullish pennant. Cenovus Energy (CVE.TO) outperformed on its MEG Energy acquisition, lifting Canadian energy shares. AppLovin (APP) rebounded from midweek weakness, closing back within a constructive technical setup. J.P. Morgan (JPM) rallied after reclaiming key moving averages, while Amer Sports (AS) surged 11.5% on strong momentum. Installed Building Products (IBP) and SkyWest (SKYW) extended gains on technical continuation patterns. Oklo (OKLO) recovered from midweek losses, maintaining its position in a volatile setup. Attention now turns to Nvidia (NVDA), which reports earnings this week, a potential inflection point for AI-driven momentum.

Options & Insider Flow
Options markets reflected strong institutional conviction. PDD Holdings (PDD) saw $147.9M in call premium bought against limited put activity, signaling aggressive bullish positioning. Tesla (TSLA) posted $119.5M in call buying despite notable call selling, leaving sentiment skewed positive. Heavy put selling in Target (TGT), IBM (IBM), and Dell (DELL) generated substantial premium collection, underscoring confidence in stability. Long-dated call buying in Coinbase (COIN) and SoFi (SOFI) highlighted institutional belief in structural upside through 2026. On the insider front, significant purchases were recorded at Infinity Natural Resources (INR), Reynolds Consumer Products (REYN), and Blackstone Private Real Estate Credit Fund, while large sales emerged at Ares Management (ARES), Palantir Technologies (PLTR), and AppLovin (APP), reflecting profit-taking in leaders.
Small-Cap Spotlight
Smaller companies outperformed decisively, with the Russell 2000 (IWM) jumping 3.9% in its strongest rally of 2025. Bullish options activity in U.S. Antimony (UAMY), USA Rare Earth (USAR), and Calumet (CLMT) pointed to institutional positioning in niche small-cap names. In Canada, speculative strength was visible in HIVE Blockchain (HIVE.V), Magna Mining (NICU.V), and POET Technologies (PTK.V), which continue to display setups for potential continuation. The surge in small-caps suggests improving risk appetite beyond megacaps, aligning with broad-based rotation themes.
High-Growth Stock Watchlist
A watchlist to add includes high-growth stocks with quarterly revenue growth above 30% year-over-year, with several even accelerating as of Q2 2025. Notable names are CRWV, SOUN, ALAB, UPST, APP, RDDT, APH, PLTR, CYBR, HOOD, PAR, DUOL, CVNA, SE, TSM, ALKT, RKLB, MELI, AMD, KVYO, SHOP, MPWR, and STX, reflecting strong fundamental expansion and positioning within the market’s growth leadership.

Conclusion
Markets closed the week with a decisive shift in tone as Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole remarks reignited bullish sentiment across equities, commodities, and crypto. Breadth improved significantly, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 hitting record highs, while the Russell 2000 (IWM) led in percentage gains. Sector rotation into financials, industrials, and energy underscored renewed confidence in cyclicals, while crypto assets surged alongside speculative equities. Looking ahead, volatility risk centers on Nvidia (NVDA) earnings and the PCE inflation report, which could reset expectations for Fed policy. Investors face a favorable backdrop but should maintain disciplined risk management, balancing exposure with the potential for shifting momentum as markets digest upcoming catalysts.
