SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition
Investors Brace for a Divided Fed as Markets Hold Near Highs
U.S. markets closed the week with modest gains as investors prepared for a closely watched Federal Reserve meeting expected to feature one of the most divided policy committees in years. Economic data released throughout the week—including consumer spending, inflation readings, jobless claims, and consumer sentiment—continued to support expectations for a quarter-point rate cut, with futures pricing the likelihood near 84%. However, mixed views among policymakers and delayed labor data kept uncertainty elevated. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Index rose 0.3% month over month and 2.8% year over year, aligning with forecasts, while sentiment improved to 53.3 in early December. Jobless claims fell to a three-year low, offering additional support to rate-cut expectations.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield ended the week near 4.14%, its strongest weekly gain since April, reflecting ongoing adjustments in rate expectations and a recalibration of risk appetite. The U.S. dollar’s longer-term outlook remained in focus as survey data showed cracks emerging in the previously entrenched weak-dollar consensus. While many strategists still anticipate a gradual decline, a growing minority expect the dollar to stabilize or strengthen, given divisions within the Fed and shifting global capital flows.

Breadth & Major Index Charts
Market breadth showed a mixed tone as large caps pushed toward record highs while small caps struggled to maintain traction. The S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average each posted modest weekly advances, marking their second straight week of gains. The Nasdaq showed relative strength, supported by a rebound in technology shares, while decliners slightly outpaced advancers on both major exchanges. Higher volume on Friday added a distribution day to the Nasdaq’s tally, though recent gains helped offset deterioration in momentum.
The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System signaled continued improvement, with the broad market displaying resilience despite uneven participation. The Russell 2000 (ETF) lagged on Friday but still posted a weekly gain as investors selectively rotated into economically sensitive and high-beta areas ahead of the Fed meeting.

TSX Recap
Canadian equities eased from record highs as the TSX Composite fell 0.5% on Friday, finishing the week down 0.2%. The pullback reflected profit taking following recent strength and softness in materials, which fell 1.1% amid weakness in several mining names. Jobs data provided a constructive backdrop, with the economy adding 53,600 positions in November and the unemployment rate reaching a 16-month low, supporting expectations that the Bank of Canada will hold its benchmark rate at 2.25% next week.
Technology and industrial stocks also moved lower, while overall sentiment remained supported by the improving labor picture and stable rate expectations.

Digital Assets Overview
Digital assets experienced renewed pressure as Bitcoin retreated after failing again to break above the $94,000 level despite earlier attempts to recover from the week’s low. The move contrasted with equity strength following the inflation report, highlighting fragile liquidity and cautious sentiment ahead of the Fed decision.
Ethereum and Solana both traded lower alongside Bitcoin. Despite the pullbacks, the broader digital-asset market remained attentive to potential policy catalysts, with rate adjustments seen as influential for risk appetite.

Commodity Watch
Commodities delivered a mixed performance, with energy and metals reacting to macro shifts and sector-specific trends. Crude oil ended the week near $60, gaining 2.7% as prices continued to stabilize after recent volatility tied to supply expectations.
Copper advanced on Friday and posted a weekly gain as it attempted to break out of a developing technical structure. The metal’s improving tone reflected strengthening price action rather than any single catalyst, aligning with broader market resilience.
Gold edged lower on Friday, with silver closing higher on the day, mirroring volatility in global risk assets and investor positioning ahead of central-bank announcements.
The Global X Uranium ETF was weak on Friday after having a strong weekly performance.

Sector & Thematic Movers
Sector performance showed a modest tilt toward communication services and technology. The communication-services sector reached a new closing high, supported by selective strength in large-cap media and streaming names. Technology shares also contributed positively, extending gains from the midweek rally.
Energy and utilities lagged, while consumer discretionary names saw pockets of strength, including notable moves in retail after several companies reported updated forecasts. Specialty retailers, educational software companies, and data-storage providers ranked among the stronger industry groups. Meanwhile, heavy construction, foreign banks, steel producers, and several healthcare-related industries trended lower.
Stock Movers
Several high-profile corporate developments shaped individual stock action. Netflix (NFLX) declined 2.9% after agreeing to acquire the TV, film-studio, and streaming business of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) for $72 billion, a deal that sent Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) higher by 6.3%. Other bidders saw weaker performance, including Paramount Skydance (PSKY), which fell sharply.
In the Dow, Salesforce (CRM) advanced 5.3% as its recent momentum continued, helping lift the index. Visa (V) and Goldman Sachs (GS) also contributed to the day’s strength.
In retail, Ulta Beauty (ULTA) surged 12.7% following raised annual forecasts, supporting gains across several consumer-related industries.
From the daily setups, Vertiv Holdings (VRT) continued to attract attention as it worked through a technical continuation pattern ahead of a period marked by elevated interest in AI infrastructure themes. Five Below (FIVE) also remained in focus as it attempted to push through a multi-month base supported by rising volume.

Options & Insider Flow
Options and insider activity offered additional insight into sector positioning as markets approached the Federal Reserve’s highly anticipated meeting. Recent bullish positioning appeared in Meta Platforms (META) and Sirius XM (SIRI), both of which continued to register notable options activity as they approached key technical levels highlighted earlier in the week. Meta Platforms (META) remained active as price action pressed against gap resistance, while Sirius XM (SIRI) continued to shape a multi-year bottoming wedge supported by recent bullish option signals.
Across the small- and mid-cap space, several U.S. names from the Daily Setups list—including Bright Minds Biosciences (DRUG), Five Below (FIVE), Vertiv Holdings (VRT), and Reddit (RDDT)—showed technical progress that aligned with recent activity in their respective options profiles or volume patterns. Vertiv Holdings (VRT), tied to the broader AI-infrastructure theme referenced throughout the week, continued to build within a continuation pattern as investors rotated toward companies positioned within high-growth technology segments.
Insider transactions also contributed meaningful signals. In Canada, filings included activity connected to companies navigating operational realignments or evolving corporate structures. The movement in Orla Mining (OLA.TO), which declined sharply after a major shareholder sold a sizable block of shares, stood out among resource names. Broader insider patterns across both countries reflected selective repositioning rather than sector-wide accumulation or liquidation, with activity clustering around companies experiencing strategic, financial, or transitional developments.
Small-Cap Spotlight
Small caps remained a focal point as investors assessed sensitivity to interest-rate expectations and liquidity conditions ahead of the Federal Reserve decision. The Russell 2000 slipped 0.4% on Friday but still gained nearly 1% for the week, extending its two-week recovery. Despite the modest pullback, the index continued to build on the earlier momentum observed across airlines, truckers, and other rate-sensitive areas, which expectations of easier monetary policy had supported.
Several U.S. small-cap setups displayed constructive technical behavior. RideNow Group (RDNW) advanced within a rounded-bottom formation, One Stop Systems (OSS) continued to pressure its 52-week high, and Xometry (XMTR) held near a recent breakout level while forming a continuation pattern. Astera Labs (ALAB) and JFrog (FROG) also remained engaged in well-defined technical structures that aligned with the broader improvement in technology names highlighted earlier in the week.
In Canada, the picture was more uneven. The TSX Composite weakened as materials declined 1.1%, echoing softness among several mining-linked small and mid caps. Orla Mining (OLA.TO) led the downside with a 11.1% drop following a significant share sale. At the same time, energy-related names such as ARC Resources (ARX.TO), Tourmaline Oil (TOU.TO), and Trican Well Service (TCW.TO) continued to build within constructive bases or approached breakout levels, underscoring the relative resilience within the Canadian energy complex.
Conclusion
Markets entered the new week positioned near highs, supported by steady index performance, improving breadth, and ongoing resilience in leading sectors. Yet the approaching Federal Reserve meeting introduced a heightened degree of uncertainty, with divisions among policymakers drawing increased attention to guidance, dissent counts, and updated projections. Crypto markets decoupled from equities, commodities traded in mixed fashion, and Canadian equities saw modest profit taking following a series of record highs. As investors navigate these crosscurrents, technical posture and upcoming macro releases—particularly labor data and the Fed decision—remain central to shaping the next phase of market direction.
“A stop loss is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign you respect uncertainty.” — Bruce Kovner
