SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition

Crosscurrents at the Highs: Earnings Week Ahead Meets Tariff Risk, Energy Stress, and Record Metals

Macro Overview

Markets closed the week navigating a dense mix of policy risk, geopolitical tension, and earnings anticipation. Trade rhetoric resurfaced late in the week after President Trump threatened sharply higher tariffs tied to Canada’s evolving trade posture with China, reintroducing uncertainty into North American trade dynamics. At the same time, investors positioned for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision, with expectations centered on a steady outcome and heightened sensitivity to Chair Jerome Powell’s guidance amid renewed political scrutiny of the central bank.

Across the week, risk sentiment oscillated rather than trended, with early volatility giving way to stabilization into the Friday close. The macro tone remained cautious but resilient, supported by firm commodity markets and expectations for strong corporate earnings growth, particularly among mega-cap technology names tied to artificial intelligence investment cycles.

10-Year US Treasury Yield – Daily Chart

The yield finished the week lower after midweek volatility, reflecting a defensive bid into the close as investors balanced earnings optimism against policy and geopolitical uncertainty.

US Dollar – Daily Chart

The dollar weakened on the week, pressured by falling yields and pronounced moves in foreign exchange markets, including a sharp appreciation in the Japanese yen that drew attention to potential intervention dynamics.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Participation reflected a mixed tone beneath relatively steady headline indexes. Advancers and decliners signaled uneven conviction, with leadership concentrated in select themes rather than broad-based risk-on behavior. Daily closes reflected repeated intraday reversals, signaling active two-way trade rather than sustained momentum. The session’s structure looked more rotational than expansive, with investors balancing policy headlines and a heavy catalyst calendar, including major earnings and key macro releases. Index-level action remained constructive in places, but small caps showed more sensitivity to shifting risk appetite, particularly where financials and cyclicals weighed.

The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System

S&P 500 – Daily Chart

The index closed the week modestly lower on a percentage basis after testing key areas of support midweek. Daily closes improved into Friday, suggesting stabilization following early-week pressure.

Nasdaq – Daily Chart

The Nasdaq finished the week fractionally lower, but daily closes improved as the week progressed, with technology leadership helping the index reclaim lost ground after early volatility.

Dow Jones Industrial Average – Daily Chart

The Dow lagged on a weekly basis, closing lower after persistent pressure from industrial and financial components. Daily closes remained uneven, reflecting sensitivity to macro and policy headlines.

Russell 2000 (ETF) – Daily Chart

Small caps underperformed, closing the week lower and showing weaker daily follow-through. The pattern reflected reduced speculative appetite and pressure in financial-heavy segments.

TSX Recap

Canada’s equity market was a clear outlier on a weekly basis, with the TSX Composite closing at a record high and finishing the week higher despite global uncertainty. Daily closes were consistently firm, supported by strong resource participation and resilience in the face of geopolitical headlines tied directly to Canada. Although Monday could be a different story if Trump’s threat of tariffs is imposed.

Materials led the advance as precious metals continued to strengthen, while energy contributed positively into the weekly close. Technology also stabilized after prior weakness. Healthcare was the notable laggard, with Bausch Health (BHC.TO) weighing on the group after sharp post-news selling. Barrick Mining (ABX.TO) tracked the broader strength in gold-linked equities and finished the week higher.

TSX – Daily Chart

Digital Assets Overview

Crypto trading was choppy but contained following the large decline to start the week, after we warned the PPO momentum indicators were looking heavy in last weekend’s report. Market breadth across altcoins skewed negative, even as pockets of speculative strength emerged in select names.

Commodity Watch

Commodities remained a defining feature of the session. Crude Oil firmed as Middle East headlines elevated risk perceptions, while weather-driven operational stress added another layer of attention to North American supply conditions. The chart is setting up nicely.

Gold and Silver held in powerful uptrends, with both pressing deeper into record territory and reinforcing the market’s bid for perceived defensive exposures.

Copper also strengthened, contributing to the broader metals tape. In energy infrastructure, winter-storm impacts added volatility to power markets and refined products, with diesel conditions tightening relative to gasoline demand expectations.

The Global X Uranium ETF (URA) remained supported, aligning with broader strength across energy-transition and resource-linked themes.

Uranium Theme – Global X Uranium ETF (URA)

Sector & Thematic Movers

Leadership clustered around metals, energy, and selective technology, while industrials and financials showed relative weakness in broader U.S. trading. In Canada, materials led as miners and metal-linked equities benefited from sustained strength across precious metals. In the U.S., energy themes were reinforced by both geopolitical headlines and operational disruption risk tied to Winter Storm Fern, which pressured crude and natural gas output and tightened near-term conditions in parts of the supply chain. Technology tone was cautious but attentive, as investors positioned into a dense earnings calendar led by mega-cap reporting and AI-related capex commentary.

Stock Movers

Earnings anticipation defined positioning into the weekly close. Tesla (TSLA), Microsoft (MSFT), Meta Platforms (META), and Apple (AAPL) dominated attention as investors prepared for results that could shape market leadership.

In industrials and infrastructure, Boeing (BA) and GE Vernova (GEV) remained in focus. Semiconductor and equipment names such as Nvidia (NVDA), Lam Research (LRCX), KLA (KLAC), and ASML (ASML) traded unevenly, reflecting sensitivity to guidance expectations.

Intel (INTC) finished the week lower after guidance disappointment, weighing on chip sentiment despite relative strength elsewhere in the group.

Options & Insider Flow

Weekly options activity highlighted strong institutional conviction in select leaders. Microsoft (MSFT), Netflix (NFLX), and Intuit (INTU) stood out with dominant bullish positioning driven by call buying and put selling. Crypto-adjacent equities including TeraWulf (WULF), Core Scientific (CORZ), and CleanSpark (CLSK) continued to attract active positioning consistent with upside participation.

Metals exposure was reinforced through activity in Pan American Silver (PAAS) and AngloGold Ashanti (AU), aligning with the strong weekly closes in precious metals.

Insider activity added another layer of context. In the U.S., notable purchases included W R Berkley (WRB) and Ally Financial (ALLY), while selling activity was widespread across sectors, including Walmart (WMT) and Atlassian (TEAM). In Canada, insider buying in Pacifica Silver (PSIL.CA) and Sigma Lithium (SGML.V) contrasted with selling in names such as Royal Bank of Canada (RY.TO) and G Mining Ventures (GMIN.TO).

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small caps closed the week weaker, with daily closes reflecting reduced follow-through and selective risk-taking. In the U.S., names such as Applied Digital (APLD), Cipher Mining (CIFR), CleanSpark (CLSK), Core Scientific (CORZ), and IREN (IREN) remained in technical consolidation, with price action compressing.

Resource-focused small caps including Critical Metals (CRML), USA Rare Earth (USAR), Ramaco Resources (METC), and MP Materials (MP) held constructive weekly structures but lacked broad speculative momentum.

In Canada, Amaroq Minerals (AMRQ.V) closed the week strong following a breakout, while Almonty Industries (AII.TO), Lithium Americas (LAC.TO), Standard Lithium (SLI.V), and TC Energy (TRP.TO) finished the week in consolidation, maintaining defined technical postures.

Conclusion

The week closed with markets holding their footing despite persistent crosscurrents. U.S. indexes finished mixed on a percentage basis, with large caps showing resilience and small caps lagging. The TSX stood out with a record weekly close, supported by powerful commodity leadership. But that could change Monday, depending on the tariff outcome. Precious metals and energy provided the clearest directional trends, while equities broadly transitioned into digestion mode ahead of major earnings and the Federal Reserve decision.

Volatility remained elevated but controlled, and the tone into the weekly close suggested cautious positioning rather than risk aversion. As markets move forward, breadth, earnings follow-through, and the sustainability of commodity strength will be central in determining whether consolidation gives way to renewed trend development.
