SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition

Market Closes Strong Into November as Tech Leadership Holds and Earnings Drive Momentum

Equity markets finished October with strength, supported by broadly constructive earnings and sustained leadership from megacap technology. The Federal Reserve delivered a 0.25% rate cut while maintaining a cautious tone on further easing. Subsequent remarks from regional officials signaled that additional cuts are not assured, particularly given the ongoing government data blackout delaying key releases. Markets responded by adjusting rate expectations while continuing to lean into companies demonstrating operational strength and disciplined capital investment.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield settled near 4.10%, rising modestly for the week, while the U.S. dollar advanced as policymakers emphasized vigilance toward inflation. Energy benchmarks held near multi-month consolidations, with crude oil closing at $60.88 per barrel and gold slipping below $4,000 as a firmer dollar weighed on precious metals. Broad macro indicators reflected a market that remains steady, yet alert to evolving policy conditions and labor-market clarity once reporting resumes.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

U.S. equities concluded the week and month on firm footing. The Nasdaq Composite led with a 2.2% weekly gain and 4.7% rise in October, building on a seven-month advance. The S&P 500 added 0.7% on the week and 2.3% for the month, supported by strength in growth sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a 0.75% weekly climb and a 2.5% monthly gain, reflecting durable large-cap participation.

Breadth was constructive but uneven. Large-cap leaders continued to carry primary benchmarks, while equal-weighted indices lagged. The Russell 2000 declined 1.4% for the week before reclaiming trend support Friday, reflecting tentative yet improving small-cap participation into month-end.

Volume expanded on the final session of the month, signaling institutional commitment to risk assets as the market heads into a historically strong seasonal stretch.

TSX Recap

Canadian equities posted another constructive session, with the TSX Composite Index rising 0.3% to 30,260.74 and extending its monthly winning streak to six months. Technology led the advance, supported by strength in energy and financials. Auto supplier Magna International (MG.TO) advanced 6% on strong earnings, while materials lagged amid a pullback in gold below $4,000. The market remains supported by broad sector participation and improving risk appetite into year-end seasonality.

Digital Assets Overview

Crypto markets were mixed into month-end as major assets consolidated. Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $110,356, holding above recent pullback levels but closing October down nearly 5%, marking its first monthly decline since 2018. Ethereum (ETH) hovered around $3,882, while Solana (SOL) traded near $186, with both showing relatively stable action inside established ranges.

Despite consolidation in larger-cap tokens, selective risk appetite persisted in altcoins. Horizen (ZEN) and zkSync (ZK) each surged more than 50%, reflecting speculative interest in smaller-cap digital assets even as broader crypto benchmarks paused.

Volatility remained elevated as crypto continued to respond to liquidity dynamics and institutional positioning following this month’s large liquidation event. Market focus remained on capital flows, regulatory tracking, and developing structure around digital-asset policy.

Commodity Watch

Commodity markets were steady, with crude oil closing at $60.88, supported by continued participation from energy equities. Gold slipped below $4,000, with silver and copper easing modestly against a firmer dollar backdrop. The uranium theme held near recent consolidations as investors maintained interest in long-cycle energy exposure.

Sector & Thematic Movers

Sector leadership remained anchored in technology and consumer discretionary as investors continued to reward companies delivering strong execution in cloud, AI, and digital-commerce. Amazon (AMZN) stood out as the session’s key driver, soaring 9.6% to a record high after its cloud segment accelerated, reinforcing leadership across the internet retail group. Broader tech participation followed, with strength extending into select hardware and storage names as Reddit (RDDT) and Western Digital (WDC) advanced on better-than-expected results. Apple (AAPL) reported record quarterly revenue and guided to stronger holiday demand; however, shares finished little changed, reflecting digestion after recent gains.

Semiconductor stocks maintained firm positioning ahead of earnings from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM). Software performance was mixed as capital continued to favor clear growth catalysts tied to compute demand, AI infrastructure, and scalable cloud services. Communication services displayed a split tone as Alphabet (GOOGL) consolidated following recent strength, while Meta Platforms (META) pulled back following elevated AI-related investment commentary earlier in the week.

Cyclicals saw constructive participation, supported by steady financials and industrials. In Canada, industrial momentum was bolstered by Magna International (MG.TO) rising 6% on strong results. Resource-linked groups diverged as energy remained supported by crude near $60.88, while materials lagged alongside gold’s pullback below $4,000.

Stock Movers

Amazon (AMZN) climbed 9.6%, reaching a record market capitalization of $2.61 trillion following strong cloud-growth figures. Alphabet (GOOGL) advanced after posting solid cash-flow-supported investment plans. Meta (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) softened amid elevated AI-related expenditure updates, while market attention turned toward upcoming earnings from Palantir (PLTR), Robinhood (HOOD), AppLovin (APP), and Astera Labs (ALAB).

In Canada, Abaxx Technologies (ABXX.NE) surged more than 22%, supported by strong trading interest following recent corporate updates and increased attention on its digital-commodity exchange and infrastructure platform.

Options & Insider Flow

Options activity remained decisively bullish, characterized by significant call-premium deployment and notable put-selling across technology, AI infrastructure, crypto-linked equities, and high-growth software names.

Key institutional flows included:

  • LULU – ~$110M put-premium collected
  • META – net $22.8M
  • TSLA – net $13.6M
  • AVGO – net $13.5M
  • Broad participation in NFLX, PLTR, QS, MSTR, RDDT, CIFR, GOOG, MARA, BMNR, DDOG

Individual trades reflected aggressive positioning in LYFT, WULF, NBIS, IREN, MRVL, and DDOG, alongside at-the-money put selling in SYM.

Insider activity leaned constructive, highlighted by notable buying in OPKO Health (OPK), AllianceBernstein (AB), Amrize AG (AMRZ), and AV Homes (AVHI), along with Canadian issuers including:

  • Osisko Development (ODV.V)
  • Mako Mining (MKO.V)
  • Celestica (CLS.TO)
  • NanoXplore (GRA.TO)
  • EQB Inc. (EQB.TO)
  • PrairieSky Royalty (PSK.TO)

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small-cap participation improved late in the week as risk appetite broadened. Notable strength emerged in AI-powered leveraged equities such as TeraWulf (WULF), Marathon Digital (MARA), Nebius Group (NBIS), and Iris Energy (IREN), along with early-trend improvement in emerging software and infrastructure names. Liquidity remained selective, favoring companies exhibiting defined technical setups and consistent institutional interest.

Conclusion

Markets enter November with constructive momentum, supported by broad earnings strength, durable technology leadership, and improving participation across selective high-beta segments. With seasonality historically favorable and institutional support firm into month-end, price action reflects a market preparing to navigate earnings, policy commentary, and the return of economic data releases with disciplined optimism.
