SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition

Markets Struggle as Weak Jobs Data Fuels Rate Cut Bets, Commodities Shine

Markets ended the week in a cautious tone after the U.S. economy added only 22,000 jobs in August, significantly below the expected 75,000. The report marked the fourth consecutive month of underwhelming labor data, with June revised into negative territory. The weak numbers reinforced expectations for multiple Federal Reserve rate cuts, with futures pricing in at least a quarter-point reduction at the September meeting and a growing probability of a larger half-point cut.

Bond yields tumbled, reflecting both softer growth expectations and diminished inflation fears. The U.S. dollar weakened broadly against major peers, including the yen, euro, and Swiss franc, while gold surged to fresh record highs above $3,590 per ounce as investors sought safety.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Despite intraday record highs, equities reversed lower on Friday, underscoring fragile market breadth. Declining stocks outweighed advancers in key areas, signaling caution through reduced participation.

The S&P 500 slipped 0.3%, trimming its weekly gain to 0.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5% on Friday, ending the week down 0.3%. The Nasdaq held relatively firm, finishing unchanged on the day and up 1.1% for the week, helped by Alphabet (GOOGL)’s rebound. Small caps showed resilience, with the Russell 2000 advancing 0.5%, supported by easing rate expectations.

TSX Recap

The TSX extended its winning streak to eight sessions, closing at a record 29,050.63, up 0.5%. Materials and technology shares led, with gold miners and lithium producers benefiting from renewed momentum. Canadian jobs data showed a loss of 65,500 positions in August, pushing unemployment to 7.1%, the highest since 2016 outside the pandemic. Nonetheless, the weak data fueled expectations that the Bank of Canada will cut rates on September 17, aligning with the Fed’s likely easing. The index gained 1.7% for the week, solidifying its outperformance relative to U.S. benchmarks.

Crypto Surge

Digital assets showed early strength as falling bond yields and a softer dollar boosted speculative appetite, but momentum has since turned weaker. Bitcoin retreated after holding firm above support, while Ethereum and Solana also gave back intraday gains, signaling fading appetite into the weekend. The reversal highlights ongoing volatility and the challenge for crypto assets to sustain rallies even as gold continues to advance.

Commodity Watch

Commodities offered clear leadership. Crude Oil fell 2.4% to $61.97 per barrel after OPEC+ signaled higher production in October, keeping pressure on the energy sector. Copper was weak, underscoring concerns about slowing global growth and soft demand from industrial buyers despite homebuilding-related stocks looking strong.

Precious metals surged as investors priced in aggressive Fed easing. Gold notched new all-time highs above $3,590, while Silver gained alongside, supported by safe-haven flows.

The uranium space remained active, with the Global X Uranium ETF steady as investors continue to monitor growing institutional interest. Notably, coal and lithium stocks appeared frequently in scan results, reflecting resurgent momentum in both themes amid Canada’s economic pivot toward resource development.

Sector & Thematic Movers

Sector performance diverged sharply. Technology outperformed, led by Broadcom (AVGO)’s strong results, which lifted select semiconductor names even as Nvidia (NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) weakened. Home construction stocks surged, supported by lower yields and renewed housing demand, with the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) climbing more than 2% Friday.

On the downside, energy and financials lagged as crude prices fell and rate-sensitive banks came under pressure. Materials and gold miners surged, bolstered by the commodity rally.

Stock Movers

Earnings and news flow drove notable moves. Broadcom (AVGO) jumped on strong quarterly results and AI-related chip developments, while Tesla (TSLA) rose on board approval of a new CEO pay package valued up to $1 trillion and the rollout of its robotaxi app. Micron (MU) surged after clearing a key technical setup, while Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) advanced on renewed demand visibility.

On the Canadian side, Celestica (CLS.TO) soared nearly 10% on robust technology performance, helping the TSX outperform. Alamos Gold (AGI.TO) extended gains as production expansion plans lifted sentiment in the gold mining sector.

Options & Insider Flow

Unusual options flow leaned decisively bullish. Large call buying dominated in Broadcom (AVGO), Cytokinetics (CYTK), and Amazon.com (AMZN), while heavy put selling in Charter Communications (CHTR), Fluence Energy (FLNC), and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) underscored institutional confidence in stability. SoundHound AI (SOUN) and Unity Software (U) saw concentrated upside activity, highlighting investor appetite for growth-oriented software and AI plays.

Insider activity featured sizeable purchases in Cooper Companies (COO), where executives bought more than $780,000 in stock, and Safety Insurance (SAFT) with $144,000 in insider buys. On the sell side, significant disposals included Centuri Holdings (CTRI) with over $536 million divested by a large shareholder, and ongoing selling pressure in Ares Management (ARES) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ).

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small-cap momentum remained constructive, with the Russell 2000 advancing 1% for the week. Renewed speculative appetite was evident in names like Sun Country Airlines (SNCY) and Replimune Group (REPL), both showing unusual options activity. Junior miners in Canada also benefitted from supportive commodity trends, particularly in lithium and coal, as capital rotated back into resource-linked growth stories.

Conclusion

Markets wavered at record levels as a weak U.S. jobs report shifted focus squarely toward the Federal Reserve’s September decision. Equities pulled back despite intraday highs, while bonds and gold rallied as investors bet on deeper monetary easing. Breadth remained mixed, with technology and housing stocks offsetting energy and financial weakness. In Canada, the TSX extended its record-setting run, supported by materials and technology. Commodities, particularly gold, silver, coal, and lithium, provided leadership as investors sought inflation hedges and resource exposure.

The forward outlook now hinges on upcoming inflation data and the Fed’s policy response. With momentum fragmented across sectors, leadership in commodities and select growth names stands in contrast to pressure in energy and financials, suggesting the next phase of market direction will be shaped by how aggressively central banks act in the weeks ahead.

“The key to momentum trading is cutting losers quickly and letting winners run—risk management makes both possible.” — William Eckhardt
