SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition
Markets Advance as Tech Leads; Inflation Data Looms
U.S. equities closed the week with robust gains across major indexes, recovering from early-August volatility and brushing against record highs. The Nasdaq Composite set a new closing high, while the S&P 500 finished just short of its peak. Optimism was fueled by resilient corporate earnings, easing fears around tariff impacts, and growing expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts in September. Market pricing now reflects a high probability of a quarter-point reduction, with traders factoring in multiple cuts by year-end.
Tariff implementation dominated the macro backdrop, with exemptions granted to select products, including key technology hardware, softening the perceived economic blow. However, inflationary risks remain in focus, with upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) reports set to test the market’s resilience. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield settled near 4.28%, recovering slightly after last week’s bond rally. The U.S. dollar fell back down to a support line.

Breadth & Major Index Charts
Market breadth showed uneven participation, with megacap technology stocks and AI-related names driving the bulk of index gains. The S&P 500 rose 2.4% for the week, its strongest performance since late June, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 3.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.3%, and the Russell 2000 gained 2.4% but continues to encounter resistance at key technical levels.
The market breadth signaled underlying market strength early in the week before moderating into the close, reflecting selective sector participation. Equal-weighted indexes lagged slightly, suggesting leadership concentration remains a feature of the current rally.

TSX Recap
Canadian equities closed the week with their strongest advance since September, despite finishing Friday marginally lower. The TSX Composite Index ended at 27,758.68, down less than 0.01% on the day but up 2.7% for the week. Standout corporate earnings drove gains, notably Open Text climbing 10% after beating estimates and Shopify surging over 20% earlier in the week to become Canada’s most valuable public company. Lundin Gold added 6.5% post-earnings, while Sun Life Financial fell 7.9% on lowered U.S. dental profit targets. Canadian employment data showed a loss of 40,800 jobs in July, adding to signs of a slowing North American labor market.

Crypto Surge
Cryptocurrencies closed the week with a constructive tone, highlighted by Ethereum’s attempt to break out from a multi-week consolidation with momentum at its back. ETF inflows into Ethereum products remained strong, reinforcing bullish sentiment and drawing increased institutional interest. The move in Ethereum has been accompanied by strength in crypto-adjacent equities, with BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR) continuing to advance off its 50-day moving average toward the upper end of its technical pattern, and SharpLink Gaming (SBET) holding near the apex of a multi-month consolidation/continuation structure on surging volume. Bitcoin continues its bullish flag breakout attempt.

Commodity Watch
Gold futures surged to record levels during the session, with December contracts reaching $3,534.10 intraday before settling at $3,491.30. The rally was driven by uncertainty over U.S. tariffs on Swiss gold imports, though late-session clarification from the White House eased some pressure. Spot gold finished near $3,394. Silver closed at $38.42, holding firm despite volatility.
Energy markets softened, with WTI crude ending the week at $63.35 and Brent at $66.11, both posting weekly declines amid reports of potential U.S.–Russia ceasefire discussions. Copper prices firmed on improved demand sentiment, while uranium-related equities were stable as the Global X Uranium ETF held recent support.
The Global X Lithium ETF, along with many lithium names, appears bullishly positioned to move higher. Monitor for upside momentum to see if price action can finally break out from this significant multi-year falling wedge pattern.

Sector & Thematic Movers
Technology and communication services outperformed, powered by gains in Apple, Alphabet, and AI hardware leaders. Semiconductors advanced, with the VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF climbing 3.4%. Industrials and financials posted moderate weekly gains, while utilities and real estate lagged. Materials were supported by strength in metals and mining stocks, with the SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF jumping 9.5%.
Stock Movers
Apple soared 13.3% for its best week in five years, buoyed by tariff relief and a strong technical rebound. Alphabet advanced 6.5%, breaking through key resistance levels. Tesla rose 8.9% as optimism built around autonomous driving developments. In Canada, Open Text and Lundin Gold posted sharp earnings-driven gains, while Sun Life Financial declined on guidance cuts. In the U.S., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac surged nearly 20% each after reports of potential share offerings.

Options & Insider Flow
Options flow was broadly bullish, driven by heavy call buying and put selling in Apple (AAPL), CoreWeave (CRWV), Alphabet (GOOG), and Tesla (TSLA). Notable fresh positions exceeding prior open interest appeared in Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Standard Lithium (SLI), and Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS). SharpLink Gaming (SBET) saw targeted put selling aligned with its technical setup. Insider activity featured buying in Asana (ASAN), Portillo’s (PTLO), and Pinnacle Financial Partners (PNFP), while large sales occurred in CCC Intelligent Solutions (CCCS), Bowhead Specialty (BOW), and NVIDIA (NVDA).
Small-Cap Spotlight
Small-cap gains were selective, led by momentum names like BMNR nearing breakout, SBET holding at key resistance, and BTCS retesting a bullish flag. Other constructive setups included Critical Metals (CRML) and Bright Minds Biosciences (DRUG), while in Canada Standard Lithium (SLI) and Trulieve Cannabis (TRUL.CA) remained standouts. Follow-through was strongest in technically clean, volume-backed patterns.
Conclusion
Markets ended the week with strong upward momentum, driven by technology leadership and tempered tariff concerns. Breadth showed selective participation, suggesting reliance on megacaps remains a key feature. Commodities reflected a mixed inflation signal, with gold’s spike underscoring sensitivity to policy uncertainty. With inflation data and retail sales on deck, the coming week will test the durability of this advance and determine whether the rally can broaden beyond its current leadership base.
