SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition

Year-End Markets Hold Firm as Metals Surge and Liquidity Thins

Markets closed the holiday-shortened week with subdued price action but elevated cross-asset signals. Rate expectations remained a central backdrop, with futures continuing to price multiple Federal Reserve rate cuts in 2026. The 10-Year US Treasury Yield held near 4.136%, reflecting stable rate expectations despite mixed global inflation signals. Currency markets were quiet overall, though the US Dollar showed marginal strength against major peers as liquidity thinned and year-end positioning dominated flows. In Japan, the yen weakened even after a recent rate hike, while global participants remained alert to policy and intervention risks without any confirmed action during the session.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

Market breadth reflected consolidation rather than deterioration. Major U.S. indexes hovered near record territory, with participation mixed as advancing and declining issues remained relatively balanced in light post-holiday volume. The Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System continued to signal neutral conditions, consistent with a market digesting recent gains rather than reversing them. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average remained close to all-time highs, while the Nasdaq showed mild consolidation following a strong multi-week advance. Small caps lagged modestly, with the Russell 2000 (ETF) retreating slightly while maintaining its broader range.

TSX Recap

Canada’s equity market edged lower in thin Christmas Eve trading, with the TSX Composite Index finishing down 0.2% at 31,999.76. Despite the modest pullback, the index remains up 29.4% year-to-date, marking its strongest annual performance since 2009. Materials weighed on the session as metal mining shares slipped alongside short-term price consolidation in precious metals. Energy stocks also softened, reflecting lower crude prices into year-end. Financials and technology continued to underpin longer-term strength, even as volumes remained well below average.

Digital Assets Overview

Digital assets traded in narrow ranges amid holiday conditions, with muted volatility across major tokens. Bitcoin (BTC) is fluctuating within a tight intraday band while Ethereum (ETH) remained stable around $2,930, while Solana (SOL) hovered near $123, reflecting limited directional follow-through. Broader crypto commentary highlighted continued institutional engagement and regulatory developments in 2025, though price action during the session remained largely range-bound. Watch for directional moves going into the new year.

Commodity Watch

Commodities delivered the most decisive moves of the session. Precious metals surged to fresh records, led by Silver, which jumped 9.99% to close above $79, marking a new all-time high. Gold also reached record territory above $4,549, while Platinum advanced to over $2,413, capping one of its strongest annual performances on record. In contrast, energy prices moved sharply lower. Crude Oil declined on Friday, with WTI settling near $56.90 and Brent around $60.85, contributing to oil’s steep annual decline. Base metals showed strength as well, with Copper posting a notable advance during the week as it breaks out, aligning with broader metals momentum.

Sector & Thematic Movers

Sector leadership skewed toward materials and select technology names, while consumer discretionary and energy lagged. Precious metal miners outperformed as gold and silver prices reached new highs, lifting associated equities. Industrials and large-cap technology continued to provide stability at the index level, while energy-related groups reflected the sharp pullback in crude prices. Sector rotation remained orderly, with no broad-based risk-off signal emerging.

Stock Movers

Large-cap leadership remained intact. NVIDIA (NVDA) advanced following reported licensing activity and continued to feature prominently across both price action and options flow. Tesla (TSLA) held near recent highs after pulling back modestly from a record level earlier in the week. Target (TGT) moved higher following reports of increased shareholder activity, while UnitedHealth Group (UNH) remained firm as price action consolidated. In Canada, mining-related names such as Titan Mining (TI.TO) and Almonty Industries (AII.TO) stayed in focus amid heightened metals volatility.

Options & Insider Flow

Options activity reflected persistent bullish positioning across several large-cap and cyclical names. Notable net call premium inflows were observed in NVIDIA (NVDA), while significant put selling activity appeared in UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and Target (TGT), indicating confidence through premium collection. Additional bullish flow was recorded in The Trade Desk (TTD), Amazon (AMZN), and Teck Resources (TECK). Insider activity showed meaningful purchases in Nike (NKE) and NFI Group (NFI.TO), contrasted by sizeable insider sales across select technology and energy-related companies. Institutional filings highlighted concentrated positions in several small-cap and special situation names, underscoring selective risk appetite.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small-cap stocks underperformed relative to large caps, though activity remained selective rather than broadly risk-averse. Canadian small-cap resource names continued to draw attention amid record metals prices, while U.S. small-cap participation was mixed. Volume spikes and technical setups appeared isolated rather than systemic, consistent with a market entering year-end consolidation.

Conclusion

The session closed with markets largely unchanged but internally active, as leadership remained concentrated in large-cap equities and commodities dominated the volatility landscape. Record highs in gold, silver, and platinum contrasted with continued weakness in crude oil, reinforcing divergence across asset classes. Equity indexes held near highs with stable breadth, while crypto markets and small caps remained range-bound. As 2025 draws to a close, the technical posture reflects consolidation rather than exhaustion, with price action suggesting markets are digesting gains while awaiting fresh catalysts in the new year.
