SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition

Market Turbulence Amid Economic Uncertainty

The past week has been marked by significant volatility across global financial markets as investors grapple with concerns over consumer strength, geopolitical tensions, options expiration, and upcoming economic indicators.

Red-Light/Green-Light Breadth System

Market breadth indicators have shifted towards caution. The advance-decline ratio on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq favored decliners by approximately 3-to-1, signaling a broad-based retreat. This negative breadth suggests a potential shift in investor sentiment towards risk aversion.

S&P 500 – Daily Chart

The S&P 500 experienced a notable decline, falling 1.7% on Friday and matching that loss over the week. The index retreated to its 50-day moving average, a critical support level. Despite this pullback, the S&P 500 maintains a year-to-date gain of 2.2%.

Nasdaq – Daily Chart

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite suffered a sharper downturn, dropping 2.2% on Friday and 2.5% for the week. This decline pushed the index below its 50-day moving average, a bearish signal. The Nasdaq’s year-to-date gain has now narrowed to 1.1%.

Dow Jones Industrial Average – Daily Chart

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7% on Friday, marking its steepest single-day loss in 2025. The index also breached its 50-day moving average, indicating potential further weakness. Key components such as UnitedHealth (UNH) and Nvidia (NVDA) were among the laggards.

Russell 2000 (ETF) – Daily Chart

The Russell 2000, representing small-cap stocks, declined 2.9% on Friday, closing below its 200-day moving average for the first time since late 2023. This movement suggests increased risk aversion among investors towards smaller companies.

10-Year US Treasury Yield

The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell by 7.2 basis points, settling at 4.42%. This decline indicates heightened demand for safe-haven assets amid market volatility and economic uncertainty.

US Dollar – Daily Chart

The U.S. Dollar Index rose by 0.24%, reaching 106.52 on Friday, although it closed down for the week. The dollar’s strength reflects its status as a safe haven, with gains against major currencies such as the euro and yen.

Crude Oil – Weekly Chart

Crude oil prices experienced a downturn, with Brent futures settling down 2.68% at $74.43 per barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude decreasing by 2.87% to $70.40 per barrel on Friay. Factors contributing to this decline include supply disruptions in Russia and uncertainties surrounding potential peace deals in Ukraine.

TSX – Daily Chart

The TSX Composite Index, fell 1.4% on Friday, closing at 25,147.03, its lowest level since January 17. The decline was broad-based, with significant losses in energy, metal mining, and technology sectors. Notably, Shopify Inc. (SHOP.TO) shares dropped nearly 6%. For the week, the index was down 1.3%.

Copper – Weekly Chart

Copper prices faced downward pressure, influenced by a combination of global economic concerns and fluctuating demand forecasts. The red metal’s performance often serves as a barometer for global economic health, and recent movements suggest caution among investors.

Gold – Weekly Chart

Gold prices eased slightly from record highs no Friday, with spot gold declining by 0.10% to $2,953.20 per ounce. Despite the modest pullback, gold remains a favored asset for investors seeking a hedge against inflation and geopolitical uncertainties.

Silver – Daily Chart

Silver prices mirrored gold’s trajectory, with spot silver experiencing a modest decline. The metal continues to navigate between its industrial applications and status as a precious metal investment.

Bitcoin – Weekly Chart

Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a slight decrease, falling 0.37% to $95,777. The cryptocurrency market continues to exhibit volatility, with investors closely monitoring regulatory developments and macroeconomic trends. Monitor to see if price action can start to curl higher from the lower trendline of its consolidation area.

Ethereum – Weekly Chart

Ethereum (ETH) saw a modest gain of 5.51%, trading at $2,808.15, with price action attempting to curl higher from the lower trendline of its giant triangle pattern. Watch for signs of continued upside momentum.

The financial markets are currently navigating a complex landscape marked by economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and upcoming key economic indicators. Investors are advised to exercise caution, maintain diversified portfolios, and stay informed on developments that could impact market dynamics in the near term.
