SYS Daily Report – Weekend Edition

Markets Close at Record Highs as Quarter-End Approaches; Risk Management in Focus

As quarter-end approaches, investors should remain alert to downside risk. September’s quadruple witching session has historically seen market makers support prices into the end of the quarter, but this dynamic often fades once the calendar turns. October is typically one of the most volatile months of the year, and while seasonality has been less reliable in 2025, the potential for a shift into a risk-off environment should not be overlooked. Markets may be extended, yet momentum can still carry higher. At the same time, crypto assets breaking below short-term support with accelerating downside momentum could serve as a canary in the coal mine for liquidity stress following the Fed’s recent rate cut. Risk definition remains paramount, and stops should be respected even as upside opportunities are monitored.

Macro Overview

Markets ended the week at fresh record highs, propelled by optimism surrounding Federal Reserve rate cuts and renewed dialogue between the U.S. and China. The Federal Reserve reduced its benchmark rate by 0.25%, marking its first cut of the year, and signaled that further easing is likely in the months ahead. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly dipped below 4% following the decision but closed higher at 4.13%, reflecting some tension between monetary easing and inflation concerns. Credit spreads narrowed to levels not seen since the late 1990s, signaling investors’ willingness to take on additional risk.

The U.S. dollar firmed to 97.75, regaining ground after its post-Fed decline, as markets shifted focus to a series of scheduled speeches from Fed officials in the week ahead. Globally, the Bank of Canada cut rates to 2.5%, its lowest in three years, citing confidence in inflation’s trajectory. Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan struck a more hawkish tone, nudging the yen higher before a modest pullback.

Breadth & Major Index Charts

The S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average all notched record closes, while the Russell 2000 showed signs of strain after its surge earlier in the week. The Nasdaq gained 0.7% Friday and 2.2% for the week, extending its year-to-date advance to over 17%. The S&P 500 added 0.5% Friday and has risen in six of the past seven weeks, up 13.3% year-to-date. The Dow rose modestly for the week despite Friday’s decline, while the Russell 2000 slipped 0.8%, reflecting uneven participation among small caps.

Breadth was notably weak despite the strength in the indexes, with decliners outpacing advancers across both the NYSE and Nasdaq. Elevated volume, partly tied to Friday’s quadruple witching, added emphasis to the distribution.

TSX Recap

The TSX Composite Index closed at a record high of 29,768.36, up 1.1% Friday and extending its weekly winning streak to seven. The move was fueled by a sharp 3.9% rally in materials, as gold prices climbed toward record levels. Shares of Barrick Gold (ABX.TO) jumped 9.7%, leading the charge as investors rewarded strong cost discipline across Canadian miners. Despite weaker energy stocks, which fell alongside crude oil, the broader Canadian market remained supported by the Bank of Canada’s policy shift and global appetite for metals.

TSX – Daily Chart

Crypto Surge

Crypto markets showed pronounced weakness as major tokens slipped below short-term support, with downside momentum accelerating. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Avalanche, Solana, and Sui all registered declines, reflecting waning liquidity and renewed risk aversion following the Fed’s rate decision. This weakness runs counter to broader equity strength and may serve as an early warning signal for risk sentiment. The correlation between liquidity conditions and crypto markets has often positioned digital assets as a barometer of broader market appetite, underscoring the importance of monitoring these moves as quarter-end approaches.

Commodity Watch

Commodities traded in mixed fashion. Crude oil slipped to $62.72 per barrel, pressured by concerns over supply and slowing demand. Copper prices steadied, providing support for miners. Gold surged toward record highs, fueling gains in Canadian producers, while silver tracked higher alongside the broader precious metals rally.

Uranium was a standout theme, with the Global X Uranium ETF (URA) breaking out from a consolidation pattern. Friday’s session saw heavy bullish options activity across uranium names, including Cameco (CCJ) and NexGen Energy (NXE), reflecting institutional conviction in the sector’s upside potential. While momentum remains positive, investors must remain mindful of potential correlations that could emerge in a risk-off environment.

Uranium Theme – Global X Uranium ETF

Sector & Thematic Movers

Sector performance was led by utilities and technology, with chipmakers surging after Nvidia (NVDA) disclosed a $5 billion stake in Intel (INTC). The semiconductor group advanced 3.7% on the week, while software and innovation ETFs outperformed, highlighted by the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), which gained over 8%. Financials and consumer staples posted modest gains, while energy stocks lagged amid lower oil prices.

Homebuilders struggled after Lennar (LEN) reported weaker revenue, dragging the SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) down 2.7% for the week. Metals and mining stocks outperformed, with the SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF (XME) up 5.6%, reflecting strong appetite for resource plays.

Stock Movers

Apple (AAPL) advanced nearly 5% on the week, boosted by strong global demand for the iPhone 17, with suppliers reportedly asked to raise production. Micron Technology (MU) surged nearly 37% in September, though investors weighed whether to secure profits ahead of upcoming earnings. Astera Labs (ALAB) and IonQ (IONQ) extended speculative gains, while Oklo (OKLO) soared over 63% last week, drawing increased attention from institutional analysts.

Tesla (TSLA) rebounded more than 2% Friday after receiving regulatory approval in Arizona for its ride-hailing service and an analyst upgrade citing expansion into robotics and autonomous markets. Amgen (AMGN) rose over 2% following positive regulatory developments, while Uber (UBER) gained 3% after holding support earlier in the week.

Losers included Scholastic (SCHL), down 11% on weak earnings, and StubHub (STUB), which fell 10% after a post-IPO surge. Lennar (LEN) also weighed on housing stocks, dropping after reporting a sharp decline in quarterly earnings.

Options & Insider Flow

Options flow on September 19 leaned overwhelmingly bullish, with heavy institutional block trades in lululemon (LULU), Apple (AAPL), Tesla (TSLA), Oklo (OKLO), UnitedHealth (UNH), and CoreWeave (CRWV). Sentiment skewed toward aggressive upside exposure, with put selling a dominant theme across several large-cap names.

Individual trades showed conviction in growth and resource sectors. Notable bullish activity included BigBear.ai (BBAI), Lyft (LYFT), Fortuna Mining (FSM), Offerpad (OPAD), Nebius Group (NBIS), BitMine Immersion (BMNR), and CoreWeave (CRWV). Importantly, uranium names such as Cameco (CCJ) and NexGen Energy (NXE) saw heavy call buying, reinforcing sector momentum.

Insider activity highlighted substantial U.S. purchases at EzFill (EZFL), Archrock (AROC), and NextDecade (NEXT), alongside Canadian transactions in Minera Alamos (MAI) and Surge Copper (SURG). Significant insider sales were recorded in Dell (DELL), NVIDIA (NVDA), and Extendicare (EXE.TO), among others.

Small-Cap Spotlight

Small caps remain mixed. The Russell 2000 pulled back Friday but remains higher for the week, reflecting both speculative appetite and pockets of fragility. Quantum computing names such as Rigetti (RGTI) and IonQ (IONQ) showed outsized gains, while uranium-related small caps in Canada, including Kraken Robotics (PNG.V) and Gatekeeper Systems (GSI.V), continued to form setups. Despite the strength, extended valuations highlight the importance of disciplined risk management.

Conclusion

As quarter-end approaches, markets sit at record highs with momentum still strong but breadth deteriorating. Historically, October has carried bouts of volatility, and while seasonality has been unreliable this year, extended valuations warrant caution. Crypto’s accelerating weakness below support levels may serve as a warning signal for liquidity and risk sentiment. Uranium remains a notable bright spot, with heavy bullish options activity underscoring institutional conviction, though correlations could quickly shift in a risk-off environment.

With indexes extended, it is essential to define risk, set stops, and monitor for downside pressure, even as upside momentum persists. The balance between liquidity, policy, and positioning will be key as investors navigate this pivotal period.

“The elements of good trading are: (1) cutting losses, (2) cutting losses, and (3) cutting losses. If you can follow these three rules, you may have a chance.” – Ed Seykota
